Because the production level of the mill was low when the new plant manager arrived, it is no surprise that a quick change in the type of management—to autocratic—quickly pushed all employees to raise production. However, it is likely that the style of leadership has taken its toll on every level of management in the mill, and that is why we’ve seen a drop in production in the last 18 months. Autocratic leadership is a rigid form of management and if any tasks are delegated, they are done so in a very specific way. But, generally, autocratic leaders are not known to delegate tasks effectively and high levels of management are usually the only people with any sort of authority. Empowerment, as discussed in the chapter, is at a low.
I think the autocratic approach worked for four years because it just took that long for the effects of the rigid management to trickle down to the foremen and employees. Over time, the foremen’s responsibilities have slowly been taken away and they are not seen as authoritative by the employees as they once were.

Lastly, it is clear that the mill manager has some trust issues, which is mentioned as a reason why leaders fail to delegate tasks in our textbook (p 144). He is not trusting of many of the middle
management and lower-‐level managers to delegate the authority they need. This is clear from the middle management interviews stating that top management often bypasses middle management to supervise employees directly. When trust is gained and authority is delegated to the middle management appropriately, this should alleviate a lot of the low morale that so many of the employees feel in the plant.
