In Australian Soul, Gary Bouma, (2006) delves into the complexities of Australia’s religious and spiritual character, in an effort to interpret changes, forecast the consequences, and predict it’s future direction deep into the 21st Century. Out of the desolation of World War II sprang the Australian Committee for the World Council of Churches. This developed into the Australian Council of Churches which, in 1994, grew to be the National Council of Churches in Australia. The NCCA is 15 Christian churches, gathered from across Australia, who have embarked on a pilgrimage together . Each brings a widely diverse record of place, experience, and theology, but all share a mutual faith and confession in the Jesus Christ as God and Savior. All share a common future as they are confident that the future of Christians in Australia lies together, not in division. The aim of the NCCA is to deepen the relationship of member churches so as to communicate more visibly the unity willed by Christ and to rally towards the achievement of their mission of common witness, proclamation and service .

Monkey Beach illustrates how abuse in the past leads to another form of self-medication in the future - a neverending, vicious cycle for the members of the Haisla community. Many characters in Monkey Beach are scarred from childhood sexual abuse and family neglect, and resort to drug and alcohol abuse as a coping mechanism. These appalling memories are an account of the impact of colonization on the Haisla territory which continues to haunt the Aboriginal community throughout generations.

In his book “A Critical Introduction to the Study of Religion”, Craig Martin introduces the concept of a “cultural toolbox”, comprised of the concepts, values, traditions, icons, figures, texts, and stories in a culture that represent and reinforce the elements of the society (97-98). To maintain social order and convince others to conform to the proposed, religions employ a tactic known as “legitimation” to justify traditions, practices, and ideologies using the “cultural toolbox” of a society (Martin 94).

Despite the vast number of different religions in the world today, a single one stands out. This religion is the cumulative beliefs of the Australian Aborigine people, often referred to as Dreamtime. Dreamtime was a fascinating subject for the first European settlers of Australia, and for many generations after them. Children’s story books are still written about the topic. These tales portray the Dreamtime beliefs in a relatively accurate, yet extremely simplified, way. The truth is that Dreamtime is a very unique religion that is set aside from almost every other religion on the Earth. The religious traditions of the Australian Aborigines vary significantly from those of other religions in a few key ways: everything is somehow related to a deity, there is no distinction between things sacred and profane or real and imaginary, and there is a universal oneness in thought and in body; these differences show up everywhere in day-to-day life and heavily influence everything related to the Aborigines.

The book Lives on the Boundary, written by Mike Rose, provides great insight to what the new teaching professional may anticipate in the classroom. This book may be used to inform a teacher’s philosophy and may render the teacher more effective. Lives on the Boundary is a first person account composed of eight chapters each of which treat a different obstacle faced by Mike Rose in his years as a student and as an educator.
