After being adopted at the age of 5, I had some behavioral issues that were hard to parent. My parents took me to be assessed, I was diagnosed with ADHD. Shortly after being given this diagnosis I was put on the strongest dose of Ritalin, which I responded to by having zero affect. After the dosage was figured out, I was seen by several psychiatrists to confirm the diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. It wasn’t until third grade when I went to see my doctor, that I was then given the diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder, which I took Adderall for until sixth grade as well as stopped taking the Ritalin. As far as being assessed, I haven’t been involved in any assessments directly, rather my mother would provide the information as I was too young to answer anything factually. The purpose of all the assessments I had had until this point in life were to evaluate my behavior and determine what medications would best curve my erratic behavior so my parents could manage me as a child.
Being assessed in a formal setting happens in a very structured way, although these assessments are all different in someway or another. Everyday, people are assessing others, whether its an individual prescribing to stereotypes or just looking for a friend in a crowded area. When looking at a someone for the first time, one assesses that individuals’ age, race, and gender (Reuell, 2013). Every time I meet with a new client or client’s family, I am assessed on my capability of delivering services. I offer my background to those I am meeting, in an attempt to persuade them that I am in fact capable, despite many clients’ parents and friends questioning both my age and my credentials to accomplish my job. This assessment is an understanding of how either the parents, guardians and/or client perceive the issue at hand, and what they want to achieve through services. I also understand that when working with a client on an assessment, they might not tell me all the details that would be pertinent to the treatment, but rather they are telling me only what they feel comfortable sharing with a complete stranger. Also knowing that the assessment is just the start of the services, that the individual I see in the seat next to me, may never be this same person again.
