As a student in the school system, there are many mental conditions that could affect how they perform on a daily basis. One of the most prevalent is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This is defined as “a disorder characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity (Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine). There is much research that is currently being done on this subject as it does impact many students in the K-12 system. As of 2011, it was estimated that around 11% of students had been diagnosed with ADHD. While it seems like a small amount of students, it equates to about 6.4 million (Data & Statistics). A huge amount of children in school are having trouble focusing in class, resulting in bad grades and punishment for not paying attention when it’s not exactly their fault. Being targeted by the teacher for not paying attention and not passing the tests can lead to them creating a negative view of school and alter their effort to achieve. Much of the research is focused on the comparison of two of the most common methods to dealing with ADHD: medication and behavioral therapy.
According to statistics taken in 2011, 69% of children diagnosed with ADHD also take prescribed medication for. The remaining 31% of diagnosed children use behavioral methods to help them focus in everyday situations as well as coping with symptoms. What do behavioral methods entail? It includes what the child ingests, the environment that surrounds them (in school and in the home), and the way they think about things to help them focus and relax (Data & Statistics).

...ms that come with ADHD. Many symptoms accompany ADHD, including: trouble staying focused, not listening when spoken to, quitting/getting bored with a task before it’s finished, and being fidgety. Behavioral therapy has the ability to help a child cope with the symptoms, however they cannot erase them. When someone takes medication for their ADHD, it gets right to the brain chemistry, which is the real source of the problem. Medication helps supply the brain with chemicals that it is missing out on. By supplementing the brain’s lack of chemistry, it allows the child to do what every other student is doing; concentrating on the problem/task at hand rather than concentrating on focusing on the task.
With all of these factors and all the research, it is safe to say that medication is the better and more common choice for parents of children who are diagnosed with ADHD.
