Before we can examine if the responsive classroom can help benefit students with learning disabilities, one must know what a learning disability is. A learning disability is neurologically-based processing problems. These processing problems can clash with learning, affecting a child’s skill in reading, writing, math, and abstract thinking (LDA). School can become very challenging for students with learning disabilities. The three types of learning disabilities that I will study in this paper are dyslexia, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and dyscalculia. Dyslexia is one of the most common learning disabilities. Students with dyslexia can have a hard time reading and comprehending texts. Certain letters can easily get mixed up for students with dyslexia making it harder for them to read aloud in class. Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the next most common learning disability that is affecting more and more students. Students with ADHD have a hard time staying on task and paying attention. It is easy for teachers to call out these students for thinking that they have lost interest in the material and then resulting in the student getting punished for not paying attention. Most students with ADHD are put on medication to help prevent them from getting off task and becoming inattentive. If teachers know one of their students takes medicine for ADHD, nine times out of ten the teacher can tell when the student is off of their medicine. Dyscalculia is a learning disorder concerning math. Students with dyscalculia can have a hard time ordering numbers or executing basic math problems. Girls at this age and grade are almost fully developed, while boys on the other hand still have a ways to go with their physical development. Boys this age and grade tend to experience voice change and sudden growth spurts. Boys normally are a year behind girls in physical growth. When talking about eighth grade students, it is also important to know that their self image is a key factor throughout their day to day life. These students also are starting to become more involved in many activities, but their emotional feelings can become easily hurt. Also not to mention that hurting others emotional feelings can be easy as well. Knowing where these students are developmentally, cognitively and physically can make a huge difference in the classroom when taking a better teaching approach.
