In today’s society, people utilize Ritalin in an effective way, nevertheless like any other drug when taken incorrectly there are many symptoms and possibility for potential abuse. Ritalin in classified as a Schedule II drug, that being said, it has a high potential for abuse, but is approved for medical uses and prescribed by a doctor. The generic name for Ritalin is methylphenidate, a central nervous system stimulant, generally taken to treat those with ADD, ADHD, and narcolepsy (“Ritalin: Uses, Dosage, Side Effects & Warnings,” n.d.). In turn, to completely grasp who would benefit from taking Ritalin, one must first understand the difference and similarities between ADD and ADHD.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a chronic condition that is classified by the following: attention difficulty, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness. Children diagnosed with this condition often lose or forget things, unorganized, difficulty remaining seated, and frequently interrupt others. According to the Journal of Pediatric Pharmacology and Therapeutics, “ADHD is one of the most common neurobehavioral disorders in childhood. ADHD can impact not only school performance, but also social interaction. If untreated, this could lead to delinquent behavior” (Briars, 2016, p.2). That being said, noticing this condition early in one’s childhood is beneficial due to the fact parents don’t want their child to fall behind. Attention Deficit Disorder is similar in the sense that the individual has a tough time paying attention. Survey results showed that 29% of parents believe that ADHD medications can improve their child’s academic performance even if they don’t have ADHD and that 1 in 6 parents believe that getting high on prescription drugs is safer than street drugs (Wojtys, 2014). Such misguided beliefs from parents will only trickle down to their children and cause a negligent view of this powerful drug. Dr. Wojtys states that “once the attitude is established that the answer to life 's pains, challenges, and difficulties is a pill, we’re on the downslope with a difficult climb ahead”. The answer to these issues, he says, is education, but it must start at home, at an early age (Wojtys, 2014).
