When viewing the National Institute of Mental Health’s (NIMH) Web page on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), an evaluation of the page’s effectiveness is vital. An evaluation by a specific set of criteria is significant because it determines whether or not the information is actually usable by the reader. The NIMH describes ADHD by defining it as “a brain disorder marked by an ongoing pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development”, breaking down the meaning of each word representative of the acronym ADHD, explaining signs and symptoms, detailing risk factors, describing treatment and therapy options, and ending with the inclusion of additional resources to learn more (“Attention Deficit”, 2016, para. 1). When evaluating the NIMH’s page, it is certainly effective in meeting the important criteria of authority, currency, and objectivity to make the information useful to the reader.
Firstly, the NIMH satisfies the criterion of authority on its page on ADHD. The authority of the author is established in the NIMH operating as a government Website with a government domain name and being “a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services”; this provides automatic credibility to the author, as government supported Web pages are known to be accurate factual (“Attention Deficit”, 2016, footer). Also, as a government page, there is contact information provided so that the reader might call or email the NIMH regarding any questions about citations or facts on the site, which only further proves the authoritativeness and legitimacy of the author (“Citing”, 2016). While reading the NIMH’s Web page on ADHD, it is undeniable that an analyzation is required. Without being tested to certain criteria, it cannot be ascertained whether or not the information is valuable and usable by the reader. The NIMH is exemplary in demonstrating this, especially when looking at their page on ADHD. In meeting the criteria of authority, currency, and objectivity, the NIMH makes the facts and information incredibly useful to the reader.
