In many school districts, recess is being reduced and even removed from a school day in order to push in more instructional time. This topic is on most school board agendas as common core is pushed in and teaching for the test is becoming common practice. As breaks during a school day decrease, the behavioral and cognitive effects increase. “Breaks during the school day, like breaks from work on the factory assembly lines, have existed for nearly as long as each of those institutions has existed.” (Pelligrini,2008, p. 182). Even with this common knowledge, school administrators and board members continue reducing recess time or eliminating recess all together from the school day. Reasoning this action is backed by the claim of valuable instruction time being postponed by the interruption of multiple recesses and the fear that it allows children the unstructured time in which to intimidate other children. (Pellegrini, 2008).
Significance of the Problem
Next to Autism, ADHD (Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder) is one of the fastest climbing diagnoses among children (Pastor, Reuben, Duran, Hawkins, 2015). Within school aged children, those with neurological diagnoses such as Autism and ADHD, as well and neuro-typical children, require movement throughout their day; approximately 60 minutes according to the CDC, 2015. School districts are significantly decreasing and sometimes removing the physical activity from a child’s day through recess depletion. This is creating an increase in off task behavior, decreased concentration, and poor ability to recall or retain information. (Yesil, 2012) We are creating a society that experiences increased difficulty with sustaining attention and performing cognitive tasks efficiently....

This limits the standard in which they are capable of absorbing information and the productivity of performance. Therefore, in order to enhance the learning capacity recess should be placed throughout a school day to alternate with direct instruction. (Pellegrini, 2008).
Statement of the Problem
The purpose of this research is to evaluate studies and determine if there are greater cognitive and behavioral benefits in school-aged students who are provided with adequate physical motor breaks during a school day than those who are not.
