ADD and ADHD are both terms used to describe attention deficit disorder attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. there are three known types of ADD/ADHD that afflict millions of children each year. ADHD with Primarily Inattentive type label is given to children who are oblivious to their surroundings and easily distracted. even though the word "hyperactivity" is included in the label, there is no real hyperactivity. ADHD with Primarily hyperactive impulsive type is considered for children with excitable and violent tendencies. This type is the most common and is simply referred to as ADHD. The third is a combined type of the previous two and in these children neither type is more prevalent than the other. This type is also just referred to ADHD. In 2013, additudemag.com stated that 11% of children in America have been diagnosed with this condition. That is up from 2003 figures, which put the numbers at 7.8%. Also stated in the article was the disparity in gender diagnoses: boys are nearly three times more likely to be diagnosed a rate of 13.2% to 5.6%. with the exorbitant rise of diagnosed children, it is easy to note that many of us know or have been diagnosed with this affliction. In this paper, the reader will gain knowledge on how ADD/ADHD affects the social, emotional, and intellectual wellness of the person.
Social skills are the abilities we use when interacting with others. They are critical to our ability to get along with others in life. The majority of children with ADD/ADHD have very limited/poor social skills. Research shows that at least sixty percent of children with this condition have significant trouble interacting with others. Many parents have discovered and been diagnosed with ADHD after going through the diagnostic process with their children. Children with ADHD frequently have problems relating to classmates when involved in group settings. Their classmates could be years ahead of them emotionally, making it hard for children with ADHD to relate and connect with children their own age. In school, if their classmates or teachers single out children with ADHD, they may be embarrassed and retreat into their own mental space.
In conclusion, ADD/ADHD affects all aspects of the afflicted persons’ life. It can hinder skills that others may normally have without any problems. With proper medication and family help Ultimately, ADD/ADHD is a livable disorder and most people live full lives without any major problems.
