Working with a child that has Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) is different than working with a child with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) is defined in “What is Asperger’s Syndrome” as a developmental disability that is defined in impairments in social relationship and both verbal and nonverbal communication. According to the article “ADD/ADHD and School Attention” and the article “ADHD-A Guide for families” Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a delay in the maturation in the brain and affect parts of the brain that allows children to solve problems, plan ahead, understand others actions, and control impulses. Each child is different and depending on if the child has ADHD or AS will determine the ways that will get them to learn or even get their attention.
There are main differences with social abilities when a child has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or a child has Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) that seem similar and some that are unique to each child. According to “What is Asperger’s Syndrome?” children with Asperger’s Syndrome have distinct disadvantages with their verbal and nonverbal communication. One of the disadvantage with verbal communication in those who have AS is that they do not understand how to have casual conversations such as how the weather is. For them to hold a conversation it would have to be about a more specific topic or instructional. Or they may take things said to them to literal and possibly give a response that may be considered inappropriate or rude. Although children with Asperger’s Syndrome have similarities with children who have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) each have clearly different disorders. Each one with its own distinct differences in how to work with the child whether it be in or out of a classroom setting. Whether it be trying to teach the child or trying to understand the reason for their social life. In order to help the child succeed knowing what disorder the child has is important so that the right approach can be taken when trying to help the child to thrive. With every child the needs are different and when helping the child to accomplish their goals the plan of action needs to be appropriately match with that child, weather they have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Asperger’s Syndrome (AS).
