Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) represents a key challenge for educators as they seek to equalize educational opportunities for all children regardless of mental, physical or socioeconomic status. This paper examines the issues confronting educators as ADHD presents problems in terms of diagnosis, treatment, and long-term consequences for those that fail to receive treatment. The evidence shows that the socioeconomic status of parents and an over-reliance on pharmaceutical medications can lead to problems for children with and without ADHD. While the mental health profession relies heavily on pharmaceutical treatments, a range of other treatment regimens are available that can avoid the side effects of medications while also preventing these medications from being prescribed to the many children who appear to be misdiagnosed with ADHD.

Diagnostic Criteria and Problems of ADHD
ADHD is a mental disorder that links the formerly distinct diagnoses of attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity disorder. The condition is typically diagnosed in children as a result of recent advancements in efforts to diagnose and treat the disorder, particularly as children suffer from psychological and social dysfunction in school, family, and other social settings (University of South Carolina, 2012). ADHD patients suffer from difficulty maintaining focused attention on necessary tasks, such as educational activities. ADHD patients also suffer from hyperactive dispositions that can also present disciplinary problems for parents and educators.

One example from the literature on the exercise benefits for children with ADHD can easily be integrated into the school setting with benefits to children without ADHD given the obesity epidemic in the United States. For example, exercise regimens can be undertaken in the few minutes before the academic portion of the study session begins, particularly for sessions that occur after sedentary periods, such as those that do not occur immediately after recess or lunch breaks. Not only will these exercise regimens benefit children with ADHD and children at risk of overweight or obesity problems, these regimens will apply to all children and thus will not draw attention to or segregate children with ADHD from their peers, which the literature identifies as a potential magnifier of the social dysfunction suffered by children with ADHD in school settings.
