ADHD in Children and Teens
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurobehavioral exemplified by chronic inability to pay attention as well as excessive restlessness and impulsivity. ADHD is divided into three subtypes in the fourth edition of the DSM-IV: predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and combined (Schweitzer, 2010). ADHD is often perceived as a childhood disorder, however a majority of people do not outgrow ADHD. ADHD is most severe in childhood and can cause decisions to be made that affect the rest of the life of the person with ADHD. In order to be diagnosed with ADHD one needs a minimum of a clinical interview, medical evaluation, standardized behavior-rating scale from both parents and teachers, and direct observation (Biederman & Spencer, 2008). This paper will discuss additional problems resulting from or coexisting with ADHD, psychological theories behind ADHD behavior, research that is currently being done concerning ADHD, and how health psychology can aid individuals diagnosed with ADHD.
Additional Problems of ADHD
ADHD in children and teenagers can cause many additional issues especially in school. Prepubescent students with ADHD often have peer interaction issues, trouble sitting still, and academic struggles. This can cause a stigma of students with ADHD as bad students and children with behavior issues. Teenagers and young adults with ADHD are known for their risk-taking behaviors which drastically raises their chances of getting into traffic accidents, substance abuse, and acquiring sexually transmitted infections (Barkley, 2006). Although people argue that we develop ADHD behavior through our culture, science actually points to differences in brain structure and function in individuals with ADHD compared to a person without it. In this essay, we touched on additional issues resulting from or coexisting with ADHD for individuals with ADHD and their families, psychological theories behind ADHD behavior, research that is currently being done concerning ADHD, and how health psychology can aid individuals diagnosed with ADHD and their families. If left untreated, ADHD can lead to many problems throughout one’s life caused by their decisions made as a prepubescent or teenager with ADHD. ADHD makes it challenging for children and teens to concentrate for extended periods of time with the afternoon and evening being the worst (Symptoms of ADHD, 2010).
