The Greek and Roman philosophers speculated, what is the nature of matter, or what is this stuff made up of? The Greek philosopher, Democritus, offered his atomic theory as the answer to their questions. Democritus’ atomic theory States that all matter consists of invisible particles called atoms. It also states that atoms are indestructible, atoms are solid but invisible, and outcomes are homogenous. Democritus also stated a possible structure, or atomic model if you will, for the atom. Democritus 's atomic model stated that atoms were solid round spheres of various size, shape, mass, position, and arrangement. He stated that solids were made of small, pointy atoms, liquids were made of large, round atoms, and oils were made of very fine, small atoms that can easily slip past each other. Democritus’s atomic model was the first atomic model ever developed, and even though it did not have any electrons, protons, or neutrons, it still help people understand the idea of an atom, and prompted other scientists to look further into the science and structure of the atom and it 's generic makeup.

Chadwick saw that because the outcome is mutually charged according to Rutherford and Thomson, he believe that there was a particle within the nucleus used to hold it together. Coulombs law states that like charges rappel and unlike charges attract. Since the proton is positively and all protons are positively charged they would repel themselves causing the nucleus to fly apart with out something to hold it together. Chadwick drew the conclusion that in experiments when protons are knocked out of an atom, They are being struck by neutrons in Gamma rays. The protons behave exactly how they would if it by a neutrally charged particle with a mass equal or similar to the mass of a proton. Chadwick unintentionally discovered but did not recognize its potential until later.
