Fad diet essay By: Omar Isa block:5 Atkins diet: The Atkins diet was invented by Dr. Robert Atkins. It is a “low carbohydrate” fad diet. This diet is considered a “fad diet” because it does not really help you to lose fat weight and instead makes you lose water weight. It basically states that you will lose weight in a matter of no time even though you don't really lose weight, you just lose water weight in that diet. The Atkins diet was created in 1963 and released in 1972. The Atkins diet is a 4 phase plan. The first phase is you eat under 20 grams of carbs per day for 2 straight weeks and Eat a high fat, high protein, with low-carb vegetables. The second phase is to slowly add more nuts and low-carb vegetables and The fourth and last phrase is when you can eat as many healthy carbs as your body can use without regaining all that weight again. The weekly cost of this diet is $102.52. This diet is advertised to mainly women to cut the shugars. Also this diet claims that you can lose up to 6-10 pounds in the first two weeks. Also this diet can cause you to have stomach and sleeping problems. This diet is kind of unhealthy because the Atkins diet says that you don't need to avoid fatty cuts of meat or trim off excess fat rather than controlling carbs is what's important. The Atkins diet is not a good way to achieve a healthy weight for a long time ( long term). Their are not really any special foods in the Atkins diet and their are only just low carb recipes. The Atkins diet was basically advertised in newspapers and on tv commercials. Also the Atkins diet could stop or prevent diabetes to happen to you and could control cholesterol levels for you. I think this fad diet is not bad but still not good. I say that because first off both diets are fad diets and they both dont make you lose real weight that people are trying to lose , it just makes you mostly lose water weight . Also they both are low carb, high-protein diets. Both diets also are advertised on tv’s and commercials. Also both diets make you feel less hungry and eat less. Now lets start giving differences. The Atkins diet was released in 1972 while the Zone diet was released in 1999. Also the weekly cost for the Atkins diet is $102.52 while the zone diets costs $92.84 weekly. Also the Atkins diet states that you can lose up to 6-7 pounds in the first 2 weeks while in the Zone diet it states that you can lose up to 1 to 1.5 pounds during your first week. Also the Zone diet can make you have kidney problems while the Atkins diet could make you have stomach and sleeping problems. The Atkins diet is used in 4 phrases and is way more organized than the Zone diet because in a Zone diet, there's not really phases and you just eat healthy. Also the Atkins diet may treat or prevent diabetes and could help balance cholesterol levels. Also in the Zone diet, it is mainly about getting energy for things while in the Atkins diet it is mainly about losing weight even though you really don't lose real fat weight. In a Zone diet you have to eat 5 meals a day. That was me comparing and contrasting the Atkins diet from the Zone diet. Now in the next page I am going to
Comparing the South Beach Diet and Food Pyramid Recommendations Recently, new ideas for diet and weight loss, such as the South Beach low carbohydrate diet, have been replacing the previously chosen ideas, particularly, the Food Pyramid. Both eating patterns recommend consuming larger quantities of some food groups than others, although which groups varies between the diets. The former emphasis on diet and exercise is also beginning to shift with the new diet choices.
But not all fad diets are necessarily bad; some fad diets help with portions but are not supposed to be used for long periods of time. Weight Watchers for example, is supposed to help its users lose 10% of their body weight and then after
This turns into a cycle of weight loss and gain, which can increase “the risk of degenerative diseases such as obesity, type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and cancer” (Vaghefi par. 7). These diseases come into the picture due to the cycle. Fad diets promote weight loss, but not fat loss. When the goal weight is attained, and the diet stops, weight is put back on, which leads to more fat being put into the body than taken out and faster weight gain. When losing weight, the biggest way to avoid developing these major health issues is to “not believe or follow any of the fad diets that promise easy and quick weight loss, because there is no such thing” (Vaghefi par. 8). Safe and healthy weight loss happens gradually, with patience and with exercise and a balanced diet. Fad diets are dangerous and should not be used as they can cause major health
One of the main differences between healthy diet and exercise and fad dieting is they can yield very different long term results. When fad dieting, you may be able to drop quite a bit of weight in a short period of time, but rest assured you will most likely see those pounds again. Fad diets focus on losing weight too quickly. The initial weight you lose is water weight, but as soon as you go back to regular food the pounds lost will return. Fad dieting can also wreak havoc on your muscles, and cause your body to go into starvation mode. Fad dieting works off of the idea that since your body needs fat to produce energy, it will burn the access fat that is stored to get that energy. The problem with this theory is that when you deprive your body of the necessary nutrients it needs, it then stores all the fat it can and starts burning energy from your muscles. The loss of your muscles slows down your metabolism, thus making it more difficult to lose weight in the long run. Healthy dieting promotes a lifestyle change, allowing for results...
High Protein diets are traced all the way back to the 1800s when William Banting produced a brochure including information and details surrounding the diet. He claimed the newfound diet, which consisted of meat and shockingly, sherry but no bread and very few vegetables, aided him in shedding his unwanted pounds. This is very similar to today's Atkins diet. Originally developed in the 1970s by Dr. Atkins, it, like Banting's idea, believes that carbohydrates are responsible for America's obese society (Applegate 26). Dr. Atkins claimed it was possible to change carbohydrate-burning bodies to fat burning by applying the concept of high protein and low carbohydrate eating. ("How does . . .?"). Nearly ten years later, Americans concluded "fat was . . . fattening," causing people to shift from proteins and fats to hefty serving of "fat-free and high-carbohydrate foods such as bagels and fat-free cookies." Still people continued to gain weight and in turn blamed it on carbohydrates. So again, in the nineties, the Atkins diet ...
Without a doubt, the Atkins diet causes health problems. Be it mild or severe effects, the problems and risks are there. It is difficult to believe that a diet where cream, butter, mayonnaise red meats, and numerous other fatty foods are unlimited could actually be healthy and result in positive weight loss. Ridding the body of obviously healthy foods such as complex carbohydrates can only lead to negative side effects for the dieter. While dieters have the advantage of choosing a plan that is best for them, these serious health risks are something that should be taken into account. In the end, it is a healthy, well balanced diet, consisting of a good amount of exercise that is the key to a healthy lifestyle no matter which way you slice it.
The Atkins Diet: Low-Carb Mania Dr. Robert Atkins ignited the dieting world when he introduced the word “low carb mania,” which is now known as the Atkins diet. The diet claims that you can lose weight on a high fat, high protein diet. The program works on four main principles which are to limit the amount of consumption of simple carbohydrates, increase the intake of protein, to exercise on a daily basis, and to maintain proper food consumption.
Compare and Contrast Low Carbohydrate Diets and Low Fat Diets The two most popular methods to lose weight are the low carbohydrate diets and the low fat diets. Both are in complete contrast when it comes to each diet’s food choices, the low carbohydrate diet which completely breaks the food pyramid limits a person to eating foods that are high in carbohydrates, such as bread, pasta and rice, while on the other hand, the low fat diet which follow the food pyramid limits a person to eat foods that are high in fat like meat, milk, and bean groups. Although each diet may sound very different from one another, they also share similarities. Both the low carbohydrate diet and the low fat diet claim that each is a good tool for weight loss.
Overall the Atkins and the Zone Diet share differences and similarities when it comes to weight loss. The Atkins Diet severely limits the amount of carbohydrates one puts into their bodies. This reduction causes insulin levels to remain more constant which in turn suppresses the appetite. Skeptics are not sure how healthy this diet is due to the high amounts of cholesterol in one's bloodstream that it leads to. The Zone Diet believes in a more equal ratio of carbohydrates, fat, and protein which the creator claims leads to an improvement in the body as a whole rather than just weight loss. However, some critics do not necessarily believe this either. The Atkins and the Zone Diet achieve the reaction within the body that the diets were created for.
A million types of fad diets promise people to lose weight by using drugs or specific diet plans such as 5:2, paleo, hormone cure, virgin, bulletproof. Moreover, each type of fad diet has its own specific style. Studies show that 108 million people in the US follow fad diets (ABC News Staff, 2012). The fad diets are the same as fashion, where people use it enthusiastically for a period of time to give them beauty, elegant and perfect appearance. A fad diet is the most dangerous type of diet and it causes many health problems.
The Atkins diet is one of the most popular fad diets. Carbohydrates play an important role in the Atkins diet. This diet is based on keeping the carbohydrate level controlled, with a process known as ketosis (Akins par. 3). Because carbohydrates are the body’s primary energy source, keeping this level to a minimum causes the body to get energy from a different source. In the place of carbohydrates, stored body fat is burned. Carbohydrates also participate in insulin creation. Insulin is what turns the extra carbohydrates into fat. Therefore, if the body is getting fewer carbohydrates that means less insulin is being created. If less insulin is being created, then less fat is being produced resulting in weight-loss (Atkins par. 5). The Atkins diet is also a 4-phase diet. The first phase of this diet is known as the induction phase. This specific phase lasts for a minimum of two weeks. Along with this phase comes a twenty gram limit of carbohydrates, and no more. During this stage, the dieter is not allowed to eat any breads, starchy vegetables, grains, or fruits (Atkins par. 4). During this phase is when the process of ketosis takes place. Phase two of this diet is called the Ongoing Weight Loss phase. This phase consists of adding mo...
Most Americans do not care enough to take a look at the nutritional values of the food that he or she is consuming. That is why America has the highest percentage of obesity in the world. This is a serious problem because one in every three adults is obese, and one in every six children is obese. There are many factors that go into the regular American diet, but most of those factors are not appealing nor is it healthy. Americans put way too much processed food into their daily diet. Some would say that other countries diets superior the American diet because of nutritional values that it carries. Other countries have proven that an active lifestyle is a huge element in the average weight of the country. There are many things that Americans could change about their diets and lifestyle that would help them to become healthier.
There are numerous fad diets that surround around restricted carbohydrates, low-fat to no-fat, or diets with gimmicks, including the Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, Calories Don’t Count, the South Beach Diet, the Rice Diet, and the Eat Right for Your Type.
These restrictive or yo-yo diets have lowered rest metabolic rate by 20%. So basically say you ate 1800 calories per day to maintain weight after these diets you would drop to 1440 calories. Sounds nice up front, right? Guess what… you’re not going to eat 1440 you’re going to eat 1800 and you will put those pounds back on plus!!
