Pauline saw the beauty of life through the colors of her childhood down South. Her fondest memories were of purple berries, yellow lemonade, and "that streak of green them june bugs made on the trees the night we left down home. All them colors was in me"1. Pauline and Cholly left the colors of the South when they moved North to Ohio to begin their life together. Through Cholly, Pauline hoped to find those colors of beauty that she left "down home".
For a while she did find her colors, her beauty, in the eyes of Cholly. He released in her all the colors of life which were sealed down in her soul. Everything about their early married life was described in vivid colors. This was true even of her sexual experiences with him. Everything was fine, ordered and beautiful in both Pauline and Cholly's life until they moved "up North".
Once they moved North everything changed. The colors went out of Pauline's life. "I missed my people. I weren't used to so much white folks...Northern colored folk was different too"2. Cholly only became "meaner and meaner and wanted to fight all of the time"2. He did not help the situation and contributed to his wife's dissatisfaction and disillusionment by not coming home. He found his satisfaction through other people, thus he neglected Pauline.
To make up for this neglect and her own insecurities, Pauline sought comfort through movies. Here she would sit and watch the perfect "white" world of Hollywood. Here she would find her colors on the "silver screen". She had a longing for these colors which was going to affect her life and the lives of her family until it destroys them, especially Pecola.
When Pecola was born, a major change occured in Pauline's life. According to Susan Willis, "Adjectives become substantives, giving taste and color and making it possible for colors to trickle and flow and finally be internalized..."3. She now wished to live her life like this, through the colors in herself.
Right after Pecola was born Cholly again began to pay attention to Pauline again the way he used to when they lived down South. The only problem was that the colors had dimed in Pauline. By working for a white family, she found her order and her colors again but not with the intensity that she once did.
I agree with both sources because after reading Baseball Saved Us I was blown away with the writing style and the illustration. It is a heart-felt story and leaves readers touched after the insight of what was a serious historical event. I think it is clear that the grimly serious nature of the tale, and in particular, the kind of existence that Sarty has. Because of his father 's penchant for barn burning and his clear resistance or conflict with any form of authority, he finds himself cut off from society and isolated. In addition, he has to constantly struggle with his own sense of right and wrong, and whether to disobey his father by revealing his guilt. This is of course what he nearly does at the beginning of the story, and his father realises this, and beats him for it. However, by the end of the story, this is what he decides to do, and we are left with a moving image of Sarty looking up at the constellations above him and then walking away from his father and family, without looking
Roosevelt’s speeches utilizes parallel structure to the best of his ability and makes it work in his favor. Lincoln on the other hand does not use parallel structure and his speeches take on a dull tone. When Roosevelt talks about the depression, he uses imagery to help the listeners see into his mind and see what he sees. Lincoln talks mainly about God’s purpose and how the Civil War was sent by God as punishment. When Roosevelt talks about the bombing, his tone laden with sadness and anger, the anger showing when he talks about the bombing and the response they had received from the Japanese one hour after the bombing. Lincoln’s tone in his Gettysburg Address is full of sadness as he talks about the deaths of the men who fought in the war.
Throughout the story “Barn Burning”, author William Faulkner conveys the moral growth and development of a young boy, as he must make a critical decision between either choosing his family and their teachings or his own morals and values. The reader should realize that the story “Barn Burning” was written in the 1930’s, a time of economic, social, and cultural turmoil. Faulkner carries these themes of despair into the story of the Snopes family.
The Spanish-American war was only America’s second foreign war and with the thrill of winning against Spain so easily and relatively painlessly came the desire to go out and conquer more territories. Many of the men that stayed behind in the United States were disappointed that they hadn’t had the chance to face the Spanish (McCaffrey 177) and half of the men that went to Cuba hadn’t even been part of any major battles (Adams 244). Between the citizens desire for a more gruesome and dramatic war and the government’s new found lust for power and territories, war was inevitable. Coming from the haze of power that seeing the words “Unable to Resist” from Spain in response to America’s proposal (Eye Witnesses 225) the United States decided that they were somewhat of a mediator in the world and it was their responsibility to “civilize” new countries and bring them up to standard; this was not something that these countries were desirous of and the United States then began their role as intimidator in order to maintain their influence in these countries. As a child, Claudia seems to resent black exploitation from the past as she does not embody the longing for ‘white perfection’ as other characters do. After receiving a white doll with blue eyes as a present, Claudia resents it and states ‘I could not love it’ (p. 19). It could be argued that the doll symbolizes prejudice against black people and how the appearance of white skin and blue eyes is preferred. As Claudia does not favour the white stereotype, it seems as though she is not living in a state of self -hatred that seems to stem from the past and live on in the present for others. Claudia and Pecola Breedlove are in the same age group, yet it could be argued that she does not affiliate herself with the same longing that Pecola feels to be ‘saved’ from black injustice by the appearance of blue eyes. Furthermore, it is argued by a critic that ‘Claudia MacTeer is Morrison’s persona in the novel, her fictional “second self” . The Bluest Eye seems to reflect this, as Morrison wants to highlight black prejudice by opposing it in her novel. It could be suggested that Morrison uses Claudia in the novel to represent her own resentment and need to break away from the past, stopping it living on in her own present, as well as the present of society. The girls’ father wanted them to have a normal and respectable American life because of what they had had to struggle through. In the novel, the Garcia sisters see Spanish as the first language, “representing their refuge” (72) and English as a difficult second language. To them America is a new and foreign place, completely dismissing the potential dangers that await them there. After arriving, they soon realize their struggle with comprehending the English language show their lack of comfortability in their new home which is socially harmful. Their accents in particular are constant reminders to the sisters and to others that they are strangers in a peculiar land. Their accents resulted in them being ridiculed such as when Carla was taunted by some boys who mimicked her accent saying “Eh-stop! ...Plees eh-stop” (153). Since the girls could not control their accents, they would have to focus on their appearance. The girls do their best to fit into society by talking and acting the correct way and developed a sense of using hand motions to describe what they were talking
As shown, America’s rapid change as the 19th century came to a close was supported by a various amount of imperialistic beliefs, motives, and incidents that almost jumpstarted the U.S. onto the world stage. Many of these incidents such as the public’s thirst for expansion, the annexation of several faraway lands, and the build-up of U.S. military forces would not have been possible without the Spanish American War. Moreover, the Spanish American war would not have been possible without the American people. Imperialism was a consequence of the American Democratic experiment, giving the people what they want.
Laughter is an interesting topic. Mainly because of the lack of thought that goes with it as to why we laugh. In an article titled Laughter: An Essay on the Meaning of the Comic by Henri Bergson, the theory behind why things are funny is explored. He mentions many different things in his article pertaining to the comic, however, there are a few that stand out more than others. He talks directly about the fact that things are only funny if they relate to humans. Then he touches on the idea that accidents are funnier than planned events. Finally, he speaks on laughter being directly related to social setting. The 1992 film Noises Off is a perfect demonstration of everything that Bergson writes about. Henri Bergson’s essay on laughter is perfectly supported by the film Noises Off.
In Beloved, Toni Morrison portrays the barbarity and cruelty of slavery. She emphasizes the African American’s desire for a new life as they try to escape their past while claiming their freedom and creating a sense of community. In Beloved, "Much of the characters’ pain occurs as they reconstruct themselves, their families, and their communities after the devastation of slavery" (Kubitschek 115). Throughout the novel, Morrison uses color to symbolically represent a life complete with happiness, freedom, and safety, as well as involvement in community and family. In many scenes, Morrison uses color to convey a character's desire for such a life; while, in other instances, Morrison utilizes color to illustrate the satisfaction and fulfillment, which the characters experience once they achieve this life.

"And Pecola. She hid behind hers. (Ugliness) Concealed, veiled, eclipsed--peeping out from behind the shroud very seldom, and then only to yearn for the return of her mask" (Morrison 39). In the novel The Bluest Eye, by Toni Morrison, the main character, Pecola, comes to see herself as ugly. This idea she creates results from her isolation from friends, the community, and ever her family. There are three stages that lead up to Pecola portraying herself as an ugly human being. The three stages that lead to Pecola's realization are her family's outlook toward her, the community members telling her she is ugly, and her actually accepting what the other say or think about her. Each stage progresses into the other to finally reach the last stage and the end of the novel when Pecola eventually has to rely on herself as an imaginary friend so she will have someone to talk to.
Within the Ibo tribe, men have more dominance over the women as they accept titles to display their power and importance, allowing them to participate in the decision making for the village. Compared to the women of the clan, men can marry multiple wives as a sign of wealth, and their wives stay home attending to their husband and caring for their children. For example, Okonkwo has already gained much respect among his tribe as “He was a wealthy farmer and had two barns full of yams, and had just married his third wife. To crown it all he had taken two titles and had shown incredible prowess in two inter-tribal wars. And so although Okonkwo was still young, he was already one of the greatest men of his time. Age was respected among his people, but achievement was revered” (Achebe 8). To prove their masculinity and power, Ibo men rely on their wealth, shown by their farming and the number of wives they have, and their fighting abilities in wars. Even though elderly members of the tribe gained much respect, a man’s contributions to the village and successes increases their importance among the clan. As demonstrated from a village gathering, “It was clear from the way the crowd stood or sat that the ceremony was for men. There were many women, but they looked on from the fringe like outsiders. The titled men and elders sat on their stools waiting for the trials to begin” (Achebe 87). During the ceremony, the way one is positioned illustrates their role in society. While the titled, important men and elders are seated in the front rows, the women are neglected in the outer regions as to show their low social status compared to the men. Achebe compares the women to outsiders because they serve little importance to the ceremony and to the village as they only work from home to care for their family. It revealed a highly nuanced and pragmatic view of humanity 's frequent, destructive embrace of warfare. The enterprise encounters a planet that is at war with one of its neighbors, but it seems to be a thriving civilization, not affected by the carnage of war, but to reduce it to computer simulated attacks and requiring the "casualties" to report for disintegration. The Eminians keep bragging about how their society flourishes despite the war, Kirk destroys their computer which is an abrogation of the treaty signed between the two planets. He destroys the computer of the Eminians, so that they will finally realize that the carnage, brutality of war makes it something to be avoided (instead of continuing the ongoing war for future centuries). War, when reduced to mere numbers, becomes painless and unobjectionable. The moral of the story, it was trying to push across here is to object to that reformulation of war. This episode attempts to address war and peace issues, it could have been made in larger statements nevertheless, it chose not to for various reasons. They both have similar themes. Angelou’s poem “Lesson” discusses the hardships that the African- American community was undergoing. She also talks about perseverance through it all and how they should not give although they might fail at first. In order to succeed you must try, try and try again. For example in the poem she Angelou states “Not convince me against the challenge. The years and cold defeat live deep in lines along my face. They dull my eyes, yet I keep on dying, because I love to live.” Angelou is saying that although the African- American community has been defeated in the past; they should not let stop them from achieving their dreams.
