Taming of the Shrew: Was Katherina the Shrew Tamed?
The question of whether or not Katherina was a shrew seems, on our
listserve anyway, to be solved. It seems that yes, Kate was a shrew,
but by the end of the play, was no longer. So, how was this big
accomplishment executed? As Barton pointed out in the introduction
to the play Petruchio tamed Kate with two techniques. The first of
the two, he was "more shrew than she" (IV.i.85-86), throwing tantrums,
and plates for that matter, showing up to the wedding in awful clothes
and starving her. The second he engaged in at the same time as the first.
He told her she was loving and kind, in hopes that by encouragement of
kind words those qualities may shine through the shrewish ones. So as
Barton explains, "Petruchio wins in the end not because of superior force
but because he succeeds in showing Katherina both the unloveliness of the
false personality she has adopted and the emotional truth of the self she
has submerged." In other words, she figures out who she really is and gets
in contact with her true self.
Now on to the tough question. Did Kate want to be tamed? I would
have to say yes, for one simple reason. Kate was not stupid; she knew
what Petruchio was up to. After all, he stated that he wanted to tame
her. "For I am he am born to tame you, Kate" (II.i.276). It does not
get much more evident than that. Even before Petruchio states it
simply, Kate had already shown signs of submission. Before she even
talked to Petruchio she stated to her father, "I must dance barefoot
on her wedding-day, / And for your love to her lead apes in hell."
(II.I.33-34.) Kate seems distressed over the fact that her younger
sister has more suitors than she; it also seems that she does not want
to be an old maid forever and will even, "lead apes in hell" so not
to be. Apparently, whatever it takes, even being tamed, she will do,
so long as to be wed some day.
My last point is not so much that Kate wanted to be tamed, but
play. If the play was shown in these days, I doubt it would have the
The Plessy v. Ferguson case which enforced “separate but equal” affected the education system. The NAACP, led by Thurgood Marshall, persuaded the courts to overthrow the Plessy v. The Brown vs Board of Education as a major turning point in African American. Brown vs Board of Education was arguably the most important cases that impacted the African Americans and the white society because it brought a whole new perspective on whether “separate but equal” was really equal. The Brown vs Board of Education was made up of five different cases regarding school segregation. “While the facts of each case are different, the main issue in each was the constitutionality of state-sponsored segregation in public schools ("HISTORY OF BROWN V. BOARD OF EDUCATION") .”

Katherina is not the only one in the play to undergo a transformation. Petruchio, in the beginning went to woo Katherina only for money. He was offered a dowry by Seignior Baptista to “get rid of” Kate so he could wed his younger daughter Bianca to one of her many suitors. By the end of the play, it is made clear that Petruchio too changed and had fallen in love with Kate. The relationship that they have at the end of the play is truly love. They both are willing to change to make each other happy and they both try in every way possible to make peace in their family. The ironic part of the play is that they both think that they have control over the other one.
Kate who never wanted to show any affection by the end is kissing Petruchio in the street. “Nay I will give thee a kiss. Now pray thee love stay” (Shakespeare Vii 148). Heath Ledger, as Patrick Verona, displays the mysterious charm necessary to make him seem like a rebel. He seems to be only in it for the money in the beginning much like Petruchio.

A long time ago, a drunken man fell asleep outside an alehouse. This man, Christopher Sly, was discovered by a mischievous lord who took him into his home. The witty lord then convinced Sly that he was a lord, as well. The lord then put on a play for him. The play, The Taming of the Shrew, was about the two young daughters of Baptista. The youngest daughter, Bianca, wished to wed but her father, Baptista, would not allow this until his eldest daughter, Katherina, was married. Under normal circumstances, it would be easy to find a husband for Katherina with all her beauty, but all her beauty was covered by her shrewd personality. By this time Bianca's suitors were growing very impatient, so they decide to team up and find a husband for Katherina. In jest they mentioned their plan to a friend, Petruchio, who surprisingly agreed to marry Katherina. All her beauty and wealth were enough for him. Katherina reluctantly was wed to Petruchio and she was taken to his home to be tamed. With Katherina out of the way, Bianca was now allowed to marry Lucentio, who offered her father the highest dowry for her. In the final scenes of the play, Katherina proves that she is tamed by winning an obedience contest at a dinner party. Katherina is now even more in accordance with her wifely duties than Bianca. A fare is a type of comedy based on a ridiculous situation. The Taming of the Shrew, an eminent example of a farce, is the first of three farces written by Shakespeare.
... She asks that his wife be "more miserable by the death of him / Than I am made by my young lord and thee" (1:2:27-28). The fact that she marries Richard suggests that her curse is somewhat false. Perhaps she intentionally imposes a lenient punishment for his wife, one that she has already suffered, knowing that she might become his wife.
Her personality is strong and she is independent, unlike most women. This makes her unattractive to most suitors and gains her the label of shrew. She demonstrates her personality in the beginning of the play: "I pray you sir, is it your will to make a stale of me amongst these mates?" (1.1 57-58). Shakespeare uses the characterization of Kate to demonstrate the defiance against traditional gender roles and how Kate almost immediately speaks out for herself, unlike her sister Bianca. In addition, Kate describes her future husband as a "mate," unlike how most women would describe their lovers. Moreover, Kate is educated: "I 'faith, sir, you shall never need to fear: I wis it is not half way to her heart; But if it were, doubt not her care should be to comb your noodle with a three-legg 'd stool and paint your face and use you like a fool." (1.1 61-65). Shakespeare uses the characterization of Kate to demonstrate how she defies traditional gender roles by being the only person to speak in iambic pentameter. This demonstrates her intelligence unlike many women. In addition, Kate doesn 't enjoy receiving orders from others. When her father leaves with Bianca and tells Kate she may stay, she gets angry. "Why, and I trust I may go too, may I not? What, shall I be appointed hours; as though, belike, I knew not what to take and what to leave, ha? (1.1 103-105). Shakespeare uses the characterization of Kate to
The second reason the bond survives is that Petruchio is strong enough to accept the fact that Katherine has a mind and, more importantly, he loves her for that reason. Petruchio cleverly weaves the relationship into the framework of society without compromising the integrity of the relationship. Petruchio does this by comparing Katherine’s attitude to repulsive clothing. Carefully and calculatingly, Petruchio forges a relationship that is envied by all who witness it. Called "cursed Kate" throughout the play, Katherine is openly jealous of the attention her sister is receiving, whereas she, because she speaks her mind, is being bypassed and even avoided in the wooing process.
The Manipulative Lady Macbeth In certain situations, women are the downfall of men. Macbeth is a prime example of how women influence men. We are going to probe into the hidden lives of Lord and Lady Macbeth, and show how without Lady Macbeth, Macbeth would have lived and prospered. Lady Macbeth was a small but very important part of the play Macbeth. She is always on the side of Macbeth, telling him what she thinks he should do.
could give many reasons as to why this play became such a huge success, but
