New Developments in Genetic Cloning
Since genetic cloning is a very wide topic, the focus of my paper lies
mainly on the new discoveries which might be beneficial to human beings. The
focus of the first section of the paper is on the various cloning techniques
geneticists use nowadays. They techniques included range from the simplest and
suitable for all situations, to complicated and suitable for certain areas.
The second section of the paper, the longest section, discusses five of
the many researches performed over the last five years. The researches are
arranged in descending chronological order, dating from February 1997, to April
1992. These researches are discussed because they all have one thing in common:
they may be beneficial to human beings later on. For example, the newest entry
in my paper, and perhaps the one that shocked the whole world, was the report
about the first successful clone mammal from non-embryonic cells. This will be
helpful in the future for patients waiting for organ transplants. Scientists
will be able to clone a fully functional organ, and replace it with the damaged
one. The report on the cloning of the human's morphine receptor is advantageous
to us because this helps scientists to develop new analgesics.
The third section of the paper contains a brief discussion about the
advantages and the disadvantages of genetic cloning. It speculates how our
future will improve due to the technologies we are developing, and also the
biggest drawbacks which might come from it.
The last part of the paper, is the explanation of complicated terms used
in this paper. The terms which will be explained are printed in bold terms
throughout the paper. This section, the glossary, is like the ones which
appears in textbooks.
New Developments or Research in Genetic Cloning
Genetic cloning is one of the many aspects which has been recently
introduced to improve our quality of live. Researchers are trying to improve
our lives everyday applying genetic engineering onto our everyday lives. Cows
can be genetically altered to produce more milk, receptors in our body could be
cloned to improve our health. The techniques and new research reported in this
paper is just one tree out of the whole forest of genetic engineering.
Part I: Techniques of Genetic Cloning
Geneticists use different cloning methods for different purposes. The
method used to identify human diseases are different than the method used to
clone a sheep. The following are used techniques in genetic cloning.
Recombinant DNA
In recombinant DNA, the desired segment is clipped from the surrounding
DNA and copied millions of times.
Many of these groups utilize surveys and other census data to compile a greater amount of statistics. These studies find that a large amount of Americans that are in poverty today actually have far greater privilege in household appliances and conveniences than did those in poverty in previous years. According to surveys from 2012, 80% of households in poverty have air conditioning as compared to only 36% of all homes in 1970. About 75% have one vehicle and around 31% have two or more vehicles. Over two-thirds also have cable/satellite TV and DVD/VCR machines(Sheffield). Some commentators chalk this up to the devaluation of goods and the commonality of many of these household appliances but others see this as an increase in quality of living. Most people thinking of poverty also think of hunger and malnourishment. In the memoir, we see that the kids often go hungry do to lack or mismanagement of money by their parents. A quote from the book, “When other girls came in and threw away their lunch bags in the garbage pails, I’d go retrieve them” displays the struggle the writer had in finding enough
Walls’ autobiography establishes that there are several causes of homelessness. More specifically, she discusses that poverty prevents one from affording life necessities. As reported by the National Coalition for Homelessness, “Homelessness and poverty are inextricably linked. Poor people are frequently unable to pay for housing, food, childcare, health care, and education” (National Coalition for the Homeless - Why Are People Homeless?). Such a condition is evident in Walls’ book. In The Glass Castle, the Walls family lives in gruesome conditions because of poverty. “Because on the rare occasion that we paid the electricity bill and had power, we’d get a wicked shock if we touched any damp or metallic surface in the room” (Walls 153). I don’t really think you need this quote, but if you decide to keep it in, say how the fact that they rarely had power is important. Walls and her family also do not have enough money to buy food and clothes. As Walls described, “I had three dresses to my name, all hand-me-downs or from the thrift stor...
In The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls, Rex Walls is highly dependent on alcohol, which significantly hurts Jeanette and her siblings and drives the family apart. The Walls children and countless others like them across the United States have become victims of alcoholism, which is a factor that they cannot control, but debilitates them socially, physically, financially, and emotionally. Rex Wall’s alcoholism causes him to frequently neglect his children and ignore their needs, which often endangers them. Furthermore, Rex’s alcohol addiction affects his behavior causing him to use profanity and act in an angry and even violent manner, negatively impacting the family as a whole. Many readers of
The controversial issue of whether or not Child Protective Services are doing their jobs properly, has grabbed nationwide attention. Child Protective Services is the name of a government agency in many states of the United States whose mission is to respond to reports of child abuse and neglect. Some of these cases may include physical abuse, sexual abuse, and mental abuse (Wikipedia). The child welfare system is corrupted. The parents and guardians who are accused of abuse are automatically labeled as guilty and will have to prove their innocence; instead of being innocent until proven guilty.

Children’s Social Care work with parents and other agencies to assess the stages of child protection procedures, record information and make decisions on taking further action. The police work closely with this agency to act on decisions made such as removing a child or the person responsible for the abuse while gathering evidence and carrying out investigations regarding the matter. Health professionals have a duty to report suspected non-accidental injuries to Children’s Social Care and examine children to give evidence of abuse. The Children Act 2004 requires every local area to have a Local Safeguarding Children Board to oversee the work of agencies involved in child protection, place policies and procedures for people who work with children and conduct serious case reviews when children die as a result of abuse. The NSPCC is the only charitable organisation that has the statutory power to take action when children are at risk of abuse. They provide services to support families and children and two helplines for children in danger and adults who are concerned for a child’s safety. They also raise awareness of abuse, share their expertise with other professionals and work to influence the law and social policy protect children more efficiently. There are also acts in place to protect children such as the Children Act 1989, the United Nations Convention On The Rights Of The Child 1989, the Education Act 2002 and the Children Act 2004. Legal framework from such acts are provided for Every Child Matters which requires early years practitioners to demonstrate that they provide activities that help children protect themselves. This may be through books and group talks known as “Stranger
Wall’s memoir The Glass Castle accurately portrays her horrifying life of growing up in extreme poverty. The memoir unravels a true story about Jeannette Walls’ brutal childhood as she grew up homeless and often lacked even basic necessities such as food, clothing, and shelter. Walls’ father Rex raised his children irresponsibly, leaving them with many mental and physical scars while compromising their safety. Similar to the way Walls was raised, human cruelty remains evident in the Mac Davis song “In The Ghetto,” where the lyrics describe an endless cycle of poverty and crime. However, the movie Les Miserables depicts the

violence, discrimination, mental health issues, physical and sexual abuse, hunger and poverty. Poverty was one of the major key issues addressed in this memoir. Poverty is referred to as the inability to provide for one basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, medical etc. Walls (2005), stated that at times they would go days without eating and would keep their hunger to themselves, but always thought of ways to get their hands on some food. The basic concern of child welfare workers is for the safety of the child. Assessment of the risks involved in leaving a child with its family must be made quickly because children cannot be removed from their families arbitrarily.
In conclusion, social workers have a professional duty to safeguard and protect children; this can only be achieved if they maintain professional boundaries with all parties involved and work effectively with other professionals to ascertain this goal. Social worker’s have the responsibility to find a medium through which to reach the child, as opposed to the child establishing this. Social workers should always challenge any concerns they may have about a vulnerable child because that little step may lead to saving a life. True listening to children has the potential to produce positive outcomes for children because as it empowers them to influence decisions that affect their lives rather than being passive recipients of services, which may have tragic consequences.
It is a sorrowful reality that due to the general unsanitary conditions, disease, health, and bacteria are getting worse and worse by the minute. Society has become one that is walking in the midst of unnecessary filth, having their disease ridden kids touching everything in the house. Contaminating every possible object in sight. Contributing to the problem of bacteria and disease being spread and not killed. Millions of people suffer from this unsanitary problem, and instead of doing something about it they continue to live their abstracted lives without caring about the dangers of not being sanitary. This could go on forever. Look where the Swine Flu has taken America. It should still be isolated to Mexico, but with all of the Mexicans jumping the boarder in their unsanitary demeanor, the disease was bound to spread into our beloved country. This does not surprise me, and before our nation knows it, the Chinese will be bringing over the bird Flu, our wine will be disease ridden from the Italians stomping their dirty feet in it, Germany with their mad cow outbreak will be shipping ...
