Solomon's The Return of the Screw
Mrs. Grose, playing cleverly on the governess' visions, convinces
her she is seeing Peter Quint and Ms. Jessel in an effort to drive her mad.
At least, that is according to Eric Solomon's "The Return of the Screw."
Mrs. Grose tries to remove the governess to get to Flora.
Mrs. Grose will do anything to gain control of Flora, as she proved
when she murdered Peter Quint. He, along with Ms. Jessel, was too much of
an influence on the children. Quint died somewhat mysteriously, on a path
between town and Bly. He died from a blow on the head, supposedly from
falling upon a rock in the road. The reader's only impression of the
death is through Mrs. Grose's story, though, and so, Solomon hypothesizes,
she filters the information to make it seem less extraordinary a demise.
Perhaps Mrs. Grose killed him out of jealously. The reader can infer from
this point of view that Mrs. Grose somehow also had a hand in Ms. Jessel's
death.
Mrs. Grose then proceeds, after the murders, to twist the new
governess' visions of ghosts into visions of Quint and Jessel. Solomon
does not address the issue of whether or not what the governess sees is
actually there. His explanation is logical either way. If the governess
sees real ghosts, or if she is imagining it all, does not matter. What
matters is that Mrs. Grose tailors Quint and Jessel to the governess'
descriptions. She listens to the descriptions and tells the governess'
she is seeing Quint and Jessel. Mrs. Grose does not herself create the
visions that the governess sees, instead, she bends them to her purpose.
The governess' visions of ghosts are twisted by Mrs. Grose. When the
governess reports seeing a ghost, Mrs. Grose seizes the opportunity,
exclaiming that the ghost she sees must be Peter Quint. She also labels
the other apparition as the ghost of Ms. Jessel. In this way, she can
give the ghosts an evil quality, imparted to them because of the evil
lives of Quint and Jessel. Making the ghosts evil forces the governess'
Victorian mind to attempt to shield the children from the evil. Mrs. Grose
knows the governess will read too far into the children's actions, and

In “The Closing of the American Book,” published in the New York Times Magazine, Andrew Solomon argues about how the decline of literary reading is a crisis in national health, politics, and education. Solomon relates the decline of reading with the rise of electronic media. He believes that watching television and sitting in front of a computer or a video screen instead of reading can cause the human brain to turn off, and lead to loneliness and depression. He also argues that with the decrease of reading rates, there will no longer be weapons against “absolutism” and “terrorism,” leading to the United States political failure in these battles. The last point Solomon makes is that there is no purpose behind America being one of the most literate societies in history if people eradicate this literacy, and so he encourages everyone to help the society by increasing reading rates and making it a “mainstay of community.” Solomon tries to show the importance of reading in brain development and he encourages people to read more by emphasizing the crisis and dangers behind the declination of reading.

The next time we see Lord Capulet in the play is when he is talking to Paris about Paris wanting to marry Juliet here we see a calmer Lord Capulet showing his fatherly protective side because he says to Paris she hath not seen the change of fourteen years let two more summers wither in their pride' this shows us he is now acting older and wiser as he should have acted from the start.
The situation when Jane in locked in the Red Room occurs because she has retaliated against John Reed hitting her and the fact that she is being punished for doing so. The mere fact that she is being locked in the Red Room can already accumulate sympathy within the reader because she is seemingly being very unfairly punished whereas her cousin John has attacked her already and managed to escape any punishment whatsoever. However in the events leading up to being locked in the room, the reader could not feel sympathy for Jane Eyre as she did in a way bring the punishment upon herself for attacking Mr. Reed in the first place. If she has not retaliated she would have not been locked in the room. Most readers however probably do feel sympathy for her as she was acting more in self-defence. She was also unfairly spoken too as they were dragging her to the room itself as they say things like she's like a mad cat' and do not seem to be letting her give an explanation at all for her actions, and only listening to what John had too say. They make sure that she knows her place by telling her that You are under obligation to Mrs. Reed' and that she is less than a servant'. These are not kind words and the reader will probably feel sympathetic as she is being treated as a worthless object. The room that she is sent too is a dark and unpleasant place with memories of the dead Mr. Reed. For a child of Jane's young age it would seemingly be very distressing for her, and with the added experience of her seemingly seeing a ghost' of some kind, it would be a terrible experience. Even if the reader has not felt sympathy for Jane before this incident they would surely feel so now, as she is in a distressing situation alone. When Jane first screams out for help from someone it does seem as though people are coming too help her as Bessie and Abbot come to open the door and ask her what is wrong and what has made her cry for help.
“All modern literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn,” this is what fellow writer had to say about this classic novel. Still, this novel has been the object of controversy since it was published more than 150 years ago. Some people argue that Huckleberry Finn is a racist work, and that the novel has no place in a highschool classroom. This feeling is generated because a main character in the story, Jim, and other slaves are referred to many times as “niggers.” When Mark Twain wrote this book, he was striving to show the general public that society was wrong in the past, that the way white people thought black people were less than human was a wrong viewpoint. The book is also denounced because people feel that this book is anti-American. Russians have even taught this book to show that Americans are generally rotten people (Loeffler, class notes). But this novel is in no way anti-American, everything written about Americans is used as a satire, to make such a poignant book less serious, and to add some levity. Twain also has hidden morals in his messages. Huckleberry Finn should be taught in highschool classrooms because it is a very valuable and educational novel, with a moral and a theme that are needed to be learned by everyone.

Mark Twain’s masterpiece The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn through much criticism and denunciation has become a well-respected novel. Through the eyes of a thirteen-year-old boy, Huckleberry Finn, Twain illustrates the controversy of racism and slavery during the aftermath of the Civil War. Since Huck is an adolescent, he is vulnerable and greatly influenced by the adults he meets during his coming of age. His expedition down the Mississippi steers him into the lives of a diverse group of inhabitants who have conflicting morals. Though he lacks valid morals, Huck demonstrates the potential of humanity as a pensive, sensitive individual rather than conforming to a repressive society. In these modes, the novel places Jim and Huck on pedestals where their views on morality, learning, and society are compared.

Mark Twain creatively invents many settings throughout The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn; each setting effects the characters in different ways. One of the many motifs throughout the novel is the idea of freedom versus slavery. Through various incidents, lifestyles, and character developments taking place on land and water, Mark Twain is able to create two opposing worlds; i.e. one of freedom verses one of enslavement. Twain determines the characters' situations in life in accordance with each location and surroundings. Huck and Jim are constantly moving between these two worlds. For the most part, both are presented with the luxuries of freedom and serenity while on the river, which ends up changing both of their characters for the only as more of person, but a reliable friend. The reader gets a sense of Jim's kindness when he is willing to stand watch all night so Huck can get some extra rest.
