Free Essay on Jim in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Jim runs away for his family, so his kids might have a brighter future not for himself but for his family. While not even liking Tom, Jim risks the dream he had for his family by helping save Tom's life. Jim also shows love and goodwill as kind of representing a father figure to Huck. Jim has not been given all the freedom of the white man but he will unselfishly give to all with no prejudice. Jim represents love and symbolizes true goodwill to all. Jim is symbolic with love in the whole story. While Huck and Jim are traveling down river Jim tells Huck why he is running away. It is not all for his own freedom it is more for his wife and his children. In this one instance Jim is risking his life to possibly find a better way for someone he loves. An act such as this is an unselfish act that could possibly be rewarded with death. Most characters wouldn't give unselfishly such as this. This is truly a charater that is trying to do good and make the best of a bad situation, not for himself but for others. Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer were planning to free Niger Jim. He was owned by Tom Sawyer's aunt and uncle. Before Tom arrived to his uncle's farm Huck was already there and he stopped Tom before the Phelpses saw him. Tom hid until that night when they planned to break Jim out. But being the one for excitement that Tom was he derived a plan that would for sure get them caught. He left a note on the Phelps's porch that something was going to happen. As Huck and Tom freed Jim Mr. Phelps fired a shot and it hit Tom but Huck and Jim didn't realize it until they got to the boat and floated to the island. On the island, they decided to leave to leave Tom while Huck went to get a doctor and Jim got away. But when the doctor arrived Jim was watching Tom. Jim sacrificed his freedom to help someone who he really didn't like. Jim symbolizes love throughout the story, not just in this one instance.
When Huck and Jim sink the boat they start to gather some valuables on the robbers boat. They noticed that everything that are taking is just almost everyday materials such as clothes, cigars, and a bunch of books. Huck and Jim bring their raft to the shore and stop and sleep in the woods for the night. When they were just sitting their Huck opened up one of the books and started to read it. As he was reading it, he thought of Widow Douglass and how she would be proud of Huck for reading. While reading the book, Huck also realizes a name in the book the name is Dauphin, and was told that he is out in America wandering around. But Jim just sits back and doesn’t believe what Huck is saying at all.
Huck grows more apologetic upon the next prank he pulls on Jim. While traveling on the river, Huck and Jim reach a point in their path where a dense fog rolls in, causing them to lose their way and get separated from each other. Huck takes advantage of the opportunity given by this natural event and decides to play another trick on Jim (94). However, Jim did not handle it too well since he is worried sick. This post fog scene is one of many turning points of Huck’s moral development. He knows that it was wrong of him to make a fool of Jim because it made him feel so mean that he could kiss Jim’s foot (95). Although Huck did not mean it in a literal sense, what he said is powerful because he would have to bend over and lie close to the ground

Tom knows Jim could have been freed multiple times if he didn’t put him up to all of the childish games. Jim had stayed by Tom’s when he almost died and would do anything for him but Tom couldn’t give Jim the same respect back. His foolishness behavior caused Jim more pain and almost didn’t get him freed. Jim was a father figure to both boys and he stood by Huck’s side since the beginning of the novel.

The way Huck and Jim encounter each other on the island, draws parallels in their similar backgrounds. Huck is torn between a life of manners and etiquette and a dangerous life a freedom, and while Jim at an impasse because he is being sold into slavery farther away from his home and away from his family. Each choice, for both characters comes with a cost so they both decide to runaway, in an attempt to assert some control over their lives. After spending much time together, the pair establish a connection which at times Huck feels guilty about since it violates everything he was raised to believe. At a certain point, Huck considers turning Jim in by, writing a letter, but after recalling the goods times they shared, Huck exclaims, "All right, then, I 'll go to hell!” (Twain) and quickly tears up the letter. Twain depicts Huck and Jim 's eventually friendship as a source of emotional strife for Huck and Huck constantly has to decide whether to abandon Jim and turn him in or abandon his religious beliefs and stay with Jim. The ripping up of the letter that would have turned Jim in symbolizes the choice Huck 's has selected. For this moment onward, Huck is dedicated to keeping Jim from being sold back into slavery and has no intent on going back on his choice.
