Troubled Holden in Catcher in the Rye
In J. D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield is
portrayed as a young, troubled individual. He tells us his story from the
mental institution where he is currently residing. Holden refuses to
acknowledge his emotions in regard to the death of his brother Allie. In
reaction to Allie's death, Holden hides from himself, his true feelings
about change, death and relationships with other people. He does not
realize that his Allie died of leukemia three years before this story takes place.
Holden speaks highly of his brother. He discusses how Allie was younger
than him but fifty times as smart. Holden also tells us that Allie was much
more mature for his age then he should have been. This is the basis of
Holden's fear of growth and change. The more you grow, the closer to death
you find yourself and death is the ultimate change.
Reveling in innocence, perfectness, and being untouched by change
is the most comfortable pattern of living for Holden:
"In chapter 5 when Holden is waiting for Ackley to get
ready to go to town, he looks out of the window of his
room, opens it, and packs a snowball from the snow
on the window ledge. He begins to throw it at a parked
car, but doesn't because the car "looked so nice and
white". Then he aims at a fire hydrant, but stops again
because that also looks "too nice and white". Finally
he decides not to throw it at anything and closes the
window...What Holden sees through the window is for
him a visual embodiment of what he unconsciously
seeks: a state of Being which is distinct from the flux
of this world of Becoming, with its corruption, violence,
noise, decay and death." (Burrows 84)
When Holden talks to us about how much he loves the museum, he says
that the museum is great because everything just stays behind a piece of
glass and does not change. Some things should not change. He is really
saying that he doesn't want to change the way Allie changed. Also, he says

In J.D. Sallinger's Catcher in the Rye, is based on the sullen life of Holden Caulfield, a 16-year-old teen-ager is trying to find his sense of direction. Holden, a growing adult, cannot accept the responsibilities of an adult. Eventually realizing that there is no way to avoid the adult life, he can only but accept this alternative lifestyle. What Holden describes the adult world as a sinful, corrupted life, he avoids it for three important reasons: His hatred towards phonies and liars, unable to accept adult responsibilities, and thirdly to enshrine his childhood youth.
Allie, Holden's young brother who died several years earlier, was a major symbol throughout the story. When Holden remembers incidents from his past involving Allie, his attitude changes, such as when he writes the composition about Allie's baseball glove or when Holden broke his hand after punching all of the windows after Allie died. "I slept in the garage the night he died, and I broke all the goddam windows with my fist, just for the hell of it". (39) He feels that Allie was one of the few people who were not phony in a world full of phonies. More importantly, Allie represents the innocence and childhood that Holden strives to find throughout his three-day journey. In Holden's opinion, Allie represents the purity that Holden looks for in the world. Holden admits that he admires Allie more than he admires Jesus, and even prays to Allie at one point, rather than Jesus. Allie is Holden's role model, whom he judges the rest of the world according to. When Allie dies, it creates turbulence in Holden's life.
Holden’s life went through a major change at the age of 13 when his younger brother, Allie lost his battle to Leukemia. Holden fondly speaks of his red headed brother in the

Holden Caulfield is clearly one of those people. Depression is a disease that leads to death but is also preventable. Psychology, stressful events, and prescription drugs are causes of depression. Stressful events brought on Holden’s depression. Holden has been trying to withstand losing a brother, living with careless parents, and not having many friends. The Catcher in the Rye is a book that takes us through the frazzled life of Holden Caulfield, who appears to be just a regular teen. But by hearing his thoughts and through heart-wrenching events in the book, the reader learns that Holden is not the innocent boy that he once appeared. In his book, The Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger shows that Holden’s depression is not only affecting him, but also the people around him through Sally, Phoebe, and Sunny.

mature while actually coming off as the opposite, to the person we see in the end, despite
Holden Caulfield, portrayed in the J.D. Salinger novel Catcher in the Rye as an adolescent struggling to find his own identity, possesses many characteristics that easily link him to the typical teenager living today. The fact that the book was written many years ago clearly exemplifies the timeless nature of this work. Holden's actions are those that any teenager can clearly relate with. The desire for independence, the sexually related encounters, and the questioning of ones religion are issues that almost all teens have had or will have to deal with in their adolescent years. The novel and its main character's experiences can easily be related to and will forever link Holden with every member of society, because everyone in the world was or will be a teen sometime in their life.
From the novel, The Catcher in the Rye, the youthful protagonist Holden Caufield, employs the word “phony” to describe the behavior of a number of characters including Mr. Spencer and Ossenburger, however it is not them who are“phony”, it is the young main character. First, Mr. Spencer, Holden’s ex- history teacher, is not described as phony, but according to the adolescent, his choice of words are. Secondly, according to our main character, Ossenburger is not the generous philanthropist he portrays himself to be, but rather a greedy undertaker. Lastly, the protagonist could quite possibly be the authentic phony. All in all, the main character’s use to describe many other characters in the book is with the single word phony, when in fact the word phony would be the most probable word to describe the lead character.
