The Gods and Goddesses of Homer's Odyssey
The Odyssey was full of wonder, power, and surprises. It is packed with
epic heroes, creatures, gods, and goddesses. The gods, goddesses, and creatures
had supernatural powers that effected the lives of Odysseus, his crew, and his
family. Their actions proved to be powerful, benificial, and deadly.
The gods, godesses, and creatures in The Odyssey on many occations
proved to be powerful. Zeus, leader of the gods, was a prime example of this.
When, "Zeus the lord of cloud roused in the north/ a storm against the ships,
and driving veils/ of squall"(p.444, 66-68) , many of Odysseus men died.
Another account when Zeus was very powerful was, "Zeus Cronion piled a
thunderhead above the ship....then the squall struck whining from the west, with
gale force, breaking both forestays"(p.465, 678-682) destroying the ship. When
Odysseus tells the Cyclops "Poseidon Lord, who sets the earth a-tremble,/ broke
it up on the rocks.....a wind from seaward"(p.450, 254-256) it shows how
Poseidon was very powerful. Also how Aeolus gives Odysseus a bag of winds that
his men unleash that throw them off course.
Although the gods and goddesses were powerful they were also benificial.
Zeus was beneficial in the way that he helped Odysseus, "Then Zeus thundered/
overhead, one loud crack for a sign."(p.478, 1032-1033), this sign told Odysseus
to start attacking the suitors. The way Circe helps Odysseus in warning him of
dangers to come, "Circe forsaw for us and shared with me,/ so let me tell her
forcast: then we die/ with out eyes open."(p.459, 528-530) She warned of the
Sirens, Charybdis, Scylla, and the island of the sun god. Also Athene help
Odysseus fight the suitors and win. She also disguises Odysseus to hide him
from the suitors and Penelope.
In The Odyssey the gods, goddesses, and creatures proved to be deadly.
The six-headed monster, Scylla, killed six of Odysseus' men, "whisking six of my
best men from the ship.....She ate them as they shrieked there."(p.464, 652-662)
Not far from Scylla was a deadly whirlpool called Charybdis, "dire gorge of the
salt-sea tide.....all the sea was like a caldron/ seething over intense
fire......when she swallowed the sea water down/ we saw the funnel of the

The Odyssey - Scylla and Charybdis & nbsp; One of the most difficult tasks as a parent is to teach your child life lessons. Many have tried, and many have failed. But over the ages, the most successful ideas have come in the form of a story or tale. Aesops Fables, nursery rhymes, and other tales of caution are used even today to teach this common knowledge one must have. In the Greek civilization, thousands of years ago, many children were taught through these fun and interesting stories.

The Symbolism of Homer's Odyssey Throughout Homer's The Odyssey, many tangible symbols are used to represent abstract ideas. Each symbol that Homer uses has two meanings. The double meanings of these symbols are used to represent Odysseus and Telemachus as they strive to meet each other. While each symbol has a meaning that represents the growth of Telemachus, each one also represents, by another meaning, the growth and development of Odysseus. When they meet for the first time, the symbols, and the character traits that they represent confluence, and the resemblance between Odysseus and Telemachus becomes complete.
Homer’s epic, the Odyssey, is a heroic narrative that follows the adventures of Odysseus, the powerful King of Ithaca. The main story involves Odysseus’s return journey to his homeland after the Trojan War. However, Homer skips around in the action periodically to give the reader a better understanding and interest in what is going on in the epic. Homer takes his audience from the present action involving Telemakhos’ search for news of his father’s return, to the past where Odysseus tells the Phaiakians of his tragic journey home after the war. The events in Homer’s epic are not in order but still prove more effective at guiding the reader through the narrative. Although the events in the Odyssey are not in chronological order, the story line is enriched by Homer’s use of the in media res method because it introduces characters that were not involved in Odysseus’ adventure, because it shows the urgency of Odysseus’ return to his kingdom, and because it allows the reader to become more interested in the opening chapters without having to wait for a climax in the action.
Years later, the Telecommunication Act of 1996 triggered dramatic changes in the competitive landscape. SBC Communications Inc. established itself as a global communications provider by acquiring Pacific Telesis Group and becoming the new AT&T. The merger of AT& T and BellSouth, along with the ownership consolidation of Cingular Wireless and YELLOWPAGES.COM, will speed convergence, competition and continued innovation in the communications and entertainment industry, creating new solutions for consumers and businesses and positioned to lead the industry in one of its most signifi...
Effective competition is widely seen as a key to the development of telecommunications services. The ability of new telecommunications networks to interconnect fairly and efficiently with existing networks is critical to the development of competition. AT&T has undergone numerous changes since its inception in the late 19th century. The McKinsey 7 S framework as applied by Pascale is recommended to manage the changes they are facing to adopt a greater competitive presence in the global economy. In conjunction with this framework, numerous other models were applied to analyse the global competitive position of AT&T. Recommendations for a revised strategy and direction for AT&T have been made throughout this document including two scenarios of how the telecommunications industry might develop towards 2000, while outlining the impact on AT&T.
Global Communications is a company that needed a new strategy in order to compete with its competitors. The telecommunication industry was flooded with the addition of cable companies joining in their market. Global Communications was financially in a decline and had already asked union workers to give up a percent of their benefits in order to help. The union did so willingly in order to preserve the future of their jobs within the company. The company brought in new executives to try and come up with a plan to save the company from its decline. The senior leadership team came up with a strategic plan to compete with the telephone and cable companies. They obtained approval to implement the plan, but not without problems. The senior leadership team did not consult or divulge any of their plans to the union representative or the employees prior to their approval. Their plan included outsourcing some of the work overseas which would reduce cost but also cut jobs within the company. The senior leadership team needed the support of the union representative in order to explain to the worker's what the company's plans were and how it would affect them. The union representative was upset she was left out of the communications and had to hear it from her superiors. Global Communications needed the employees to grow and increase profitability; however they could not reach an agreement and Global Communications implemented layoffs. The union is discussing what action they will take to stop the outsourcing plan that will set precedent for the whole industry.
British Telecom as an organization realized that there is a need to develop skill set and train the internal resources. There were tough calls to be taken on letting- go a few employees. In the past there had been several attempts towards reorganization of the internal structure, hence this time the initiative needed to be all the
Outstanding companies from mainstreamed companies. Some of the challenges has encountered in the market is that the market is “Too Competitive”. They are finding that many services that were once provide by telecommunication companies are now being provided by other company like Cable. The companies that are making stability so hard for Global Communication are cable companies. These companies are not only specializing in cable but are starting to provide other services that provided complete solutions dealing with computers, televisions, and telephone service which permits them to enter a larger market with these advancements in technology. In Global Communication wants to gain compatibility with these companies global communication has to make advancements in its technology.
The events that led to the changes Global Communications are making came about with the shift in technology and the competition within the telecommunications industry. With companies able to compete globally, there is too much competition within the industry from other telecommunications companies as well as cable companies who can offer all the same services. With increased companies offering a wide range of services, Global is forced to cut costs in order to compete effectively and increase profitability. To this end, Global Communications senior management has come up with an approach to outsource some of their call centers to India and Ireland and expand new services to small business and consumer customers. Global also joined with a satellite provider to offer video services and a satellite version of broadband. This will mean job cuts and a reduction in salary for employees who remain and are relocated. The plan was accepted quickly and now management is under the gun to communicate the changes effectively to the employees without risking a morale problem that could affect productivity. Also, since the employees belong to a trade union and the union was not involved in the process of negotiating these changes, Global has to consider the legal and public relation implications of not fulfilling their contractual obligation to the trade union.
The telecommunications industry is changing creating the need for a more competitive company. The changes that are happening are that there is greater competition in the market with foreign firms such as China Netcom and China Telecom are entering the UK market[1] increasing the number of firms. Also the European Union is looking to improve competition by breaking open the telecommunication markets further by giving national authorities stronger powers[2]. The type of competition is also changing in recent times as firms grow in size and capability as they merge. The recent trend being the buy out broadband and telephone companies so that firms are then able to offer bundled services[3].
Global Communications is a financially struggling telecommunications company. Its stock has depreciated fifty percent in three years. Currently, the organization is faced with too much competition within the telecommunications industry. Local, long-distance and international markets are all competing for the same business. In addition, the industry suffered a huge blow at the hands of the cable companies, who stepped in to provide complete solutions encompassing computers, televisions and plain old telephone service (POT).
There was too much competition in the Telecommunication industry. Local, long-distance and international markets are all competing for the same business. The company suffered a great deal at the hands of the cable companies, who stepped in to provide complete solutions incorporating computers, television, and plain old telephone services. Stockholders are experiencing diminishing returns and have doubts if GC will be able to recover. Their customers are demanding more technical sophistication from their sales people. GC plans to cut cost and outsource their technical call centers to india and ireland. Outsourcing will save the company money and make them more competitive because of their international status. This in turnwill make them meet their goal of globalization . but have a gap in communication with the union.which makes the situation complex.
The telecommunications industry and other United States manufacturing sectors have been severely challenged by continuously competitive market place. The future of telecommunication and the manufacturing of goods is truly at risk. With consumers demanding more for less, high infrastructure costs and outsourcing most can barely keep up. Deregulation, digitalization of services have made telecommunications one of the most volatile growth industries in history and one of the more extraordinarily competitive.
