Transcendentalism
A whole month of being nice. From the start, I didn't think it was even humanly possible. Although I always try my hardest to be pleasant, I'm sarcastically witty by nature. This project, no matter how inspirational and uplifting it could be, would decidedly be no walk in the park. Nevertheless, I decided to persevere. Even if I ended up being a complete Transcendental failure, maybe I'd still learn something along the way.
On the first day, I went for about twenty minutes before cracking a joke at my best friend. It wasn't anything out of the ordinary for me, but I actually stopped and thought about the possible consequences of my actions. Breakthrough! I went for another twenty minutes, most likely, before making some sort of snide comment, though. Oops.
In the month of Transcendentalism, I kept a journal. I made a "Transcendentalism fact sheet" and thumbtacked it to my wall. I may not have tried my hardest every day, but I made an honest attempt. Overall, in a whole month, I may not have been completely successful in becoming Transcendental. Depending on whom you ask, I may not have even made much progress in becoming even remotely Transcendental. In my opinion, though, I think it worked.
"Why?" you ask. Because, in the course of this project, I learned a lot about myself, my friends, and the way actions affect everyone around me. Through this project, I realized the importance of accepting other people for who they are, of letting go of anger, of trusting your own decisions, and of taking the initiative to change your life. In fact, there was only one tenet of Transcendentalism - defying "predestination" by leading fate instead of being led by it - that I had a hard time believing, I think I gained a better understanding of why that thought is so important in life.
I doubt that I was any more than fifty percent successful in becoming truly Transcendental, but a change for the positive is an improvement from before. I've recognized the importance in the little blessings in life. Having a loving family, a roof over my head, and living in an overall supportive environment are things that I would not necessarily have taken the time to appreciate and be thankful for before.
Many people have theories and philosophies about life in general. There have been countless amounts of books published by countless amounts of people on the ideas of people in the past and the present. Transcendentalism falls into a sector of all of these ideas. Transcendentalism has affected many people since the philosophy was first introduced. Henry Thoreau is a name that is always associated with transcendentalism through one of his famous novels,Walden. John Krakauer is able to explain how transcendentalism has affected Chris McCandless in the novel Into The Wild. McCandless's life is comparable to Thoreau's in a variety of ways such as motives, however both McCandless and Thoreau's lives are much different by means such as their reasons for traveling, and what they did.
First off, one of the defining differences between the transcendentalist life and the life lived today are feelings towards self-reliance. Transcendentalists strongly believed that all people are unique and have the power to accomplish anything. Walden by Thoreau is a great example of this value. According to Walden, “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived’ (Thoreau #). Self-reliance as a trait is defined by confidence in oneself and ability. That excerpt exemplifies
Student who embrace transcendentalism and can believe in their capabilities, choose not to conform, and examine their belief system and ways of thinking throughout high school will be more successful throughout the rest of their lives. The formation of unique beliefs and ability to be outspoken with opinions is necessary for all high school students.
More than _____ people across the United States received some form of government funded welfare assistance during ___yr (cit). Government programs include, but are not limited to health services, economic assistance, food assistance, and shelter assistance. The focus and design of welfare assistance programs is with the intent of aiding individuals with their essential needs. Its purpose is not to benefit deceitful individuals seeking handouts. Posed with the question, “Should people on welfare be required to work?” the response from a small group of my closest friends was a unanimous “yes.” Although, this outcome was not shocking, the degree of anger and animosity that the inquiry provokes was very intriguing, as well as the reasons given.
The biggest complication with welfare is that way too many individuals have become dependent on the government, when the assistance should have only been temporary. A solution to reducing the amount of dependent families could be to reform housing benefits and social housing. The Government should look at ways to increase home ownership and reduce the work disincentives created by social housing (O’Brien). Discouragin...
Ethos, Pathos, Logos are three devices used in persuasive writing and is used for advertising too. Ethos is the appeal to character which is to convince someone of the character’s credibility. Pathos is the appeal to emotion which is persuading an audience by relating to their emotional side. Logos is the appeal to reason which is to persuade an audience by reason. Three videos exerted from the YouTube website uses Ethos, Pathos, and Logos in their history stories to appeal to the viewer to gain more followers and to get undercover history stories across.
Many people have theories and philosophies about life in general. There have been hundreds of thousands of books published by many different people on the ideas of people in the past and the present. Transcendentalism falls in amongst all of these ideas. There have been articles, essays, poems, and even books written about this subject. Transcendentalism has effected many people since the philosophy was first introduced. The idea was complex and hard to grasp for many commoners and therefore it was understood by few people, and some would think that the idea was not understood at all and that was part of the idea. Henry David Thoreau once stated about himself, “I should have told them at once that I was a transcendentalist. That would have been the shortest way of telling them that they would not understand my explanations” (Reuben 1).
The ad from Sao Paulo City Hall is a great example of how companies, businesses, and agencies use pathos, ethos, and logos concepts in their advertisements to emphasize to their audiences the importance of their product, campaign, or idea. The object of a good ad is to “sell” the ideas portrayed in the picture to the audience in one quick glance. This ad makes the audience consider what’s in the picture and what impact or affect it will have on them. Assuming that this ad is printed in a publication that citizens of Sao Paulo would see, means that the citizens would directly be affected by this idea.
The selections provide insight into showing us to recognize that rhetoric is everywhere, whether we choose to simply ignore it or not. The selections all isolate the importance of rhetoric, despite that we choose to often ignore it and fall even further to its control. One of the most occurring forms of rhetoric that employs Aristotle’s ideas of persuasion, are media advertisements. They target an audience, decide which media is best to reach that audience, and make an appeal to something that interests the audience. These are among the easiest to identify how they influence human thoughts, and emotions. If someone were to see an advertisement that suggested a payment in exchange for a better service, one might be pleased at the idea and purchase the service. If someone sees an ad that is intended for a different target audience, they might simply ignore it or become tempered that they have to sit through something that does not concern them.
Thoreau wrote, “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” The words transformed people’s lives to think more of the why in life and live with a purpose not just do what they are told, which was a driving idea within the Transcendentalist movements. Transcendentalist were hard to define, but perhaps one of the fathers of transcendentalism Ralph Waldo Emerson defines it most gracefully in a speech he gave, “The Transcendentalist adopts the whole connection of spiritual doctrine, He believes in miracle, in the perpetual openness of the human mind to new influx of light and power: he believes in inspiration, and in ecstasy”. As Emerson’s key student and self-proclaimed Transcendentalist Thoreau fulfilled these requirements to help further this movement of higher
Transcendentalism has been a very vital topic in the stories we have read this year. I've learned that transcendentalism sort of means to stand up for what you believe in. We've read many pieces from the authors: Emerson, Thoreau, Krakauer, and Donovan. These four transcendentalists all have similar qualities expressed in their pieces.
Advertisers all have one goal in common, that is an ad that is catching to a consumer’s attention. In today’s fast paced society there are so many selling products and charities. As I exam the advertisement for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty for Animals (ASPCA), I will show how they use the pathos, ethos, and logos – also known as Aristotle’s Theory of Persuasion.
If the students in our school were to all become transcendentalist, we would be much more independent and self-reliant than we are now. This is good because as we, the students, grow older we have to to rely on our independence and knowledge to help us grow and succeed, but as far as in school we will not be able to succeed in school because of the belief that we do not require guidance. This means that we would not need to take advantages of teachers because we already possess the answer we need. Being a transcendentalist we would have better appearing school grounds because everyone would respect the school by not littering, showing the importance of nature. Being a transcendentalist can be considered “nonchalant” because you are not showing
The Voice: Well, Mrs. Dryer, I go to a very competitive school. I have to take competitive classes. It's not as though the work load would go down if I dropped to a lower level. I had a very busy week, and the play just started. I'll have more time this week. I promise to practice more between now and next lesson.
Playing the viola allows my emotions to weave their way into my music. Shaping a discordant sound into expressive music has been a lengthy, laborious, but ultimately rewarding process.
