Cloning (asexual reproduction) is the production of individuals who are genetically identical to an already existing individual. The procedure is called somatic cell nuclear transfer. Scientists take a mature, unfertilized egg and remove its nucleus. Next, they, introduce a nucleus obtained from a specialized (somatic) cell of an adult organism. Once the egg begins to divide, they transfer the embryo into woman's uterus to initiate a pregnancy. Since almost all the hereditary material of a cell is contained within its nucleus, the re-nucleated eggs are genetically identical to the organism that was the source of the transferred nucleus (Kass, 2001). The genetically identical individual is called the clone and could be produced by nuclear transfer. Any person, living or deceased could be cloned, and in any number. Due to the fact that cloning requires no personal involvement on the part of the person whose genetic material is used, cloning could be completed without a person’s consent. This would be a threat to reproductive freedom, according to Kass.
Leon Kass supports a universal ban on the cloning of humans on the grounds that cloning is an affront to morality and human dignity. He say that cloning is an unethical experiment upon the resulting individual (child). He argues that this creates confusions of identity and individuality and turns getting an individual into making an individual. It also gives the parent the control over genetic make-up. The idea of parental control over children’s lives and prospects is dangerous. “As with any product of our making, no matter how excellent, the artificer stands above it, not as an equal but as a superior, transcending it by his will and creative prowess”, Kass states. ...rophy, it would be a positive showing of how cloning stem cells could help children and adults with this crippling condition walk for the first time without a wheelchair or walker. Some forms of cancer could be cured or prevented. Even though all cancers aren’t genetic, some are and this would be a great help in the fight against cancer. These are only a few of many different possibilities that could be helped by this method of cloning. But most important of all is that there is greater good than harm that could result in stem cell research, rather than human cloning.
