ASEAN: Progress and Development

ASEAN which is also known as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, is a geo-political and economic organization that consist of ten countries located in Southeast Asia, which was created on 8 August 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. But as the organization grow, the number of members also expanded at the same time that includes another 5 country members that is Brunei, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam that could be seen on picture 1.0 below.

1.0 ASEAN member countries

The history of ASEAN started by an organisation named Association of Southeast Asia (ASA) which consists of alliance from Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand that was formed in 1961. However, the real establishment of ASEAN occur on 8 August 1967, when foreign ministers of five countries that include Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand met and signed the ASEAN Declaration at the Thai Department of Foreign Affairs building in Bangkok. The main motivation factor that made ASEAN a reality is because, it would enable the country members to have the ability to concentrate on nations building, reduced faith in or mistrust of external powers problem, and desire for economic development.

2.0 Key dates in ASEAN history

The aims and objective of the ASEAN organisation is towards the stepping stone of the country economic growth, cultural development, social progress, protection of regional peace and stability, and to provide opportunities for member countries to discuss differences peacefully and to work together in solving matter that may affect in their country stability during the annual ASEAN meeting that is being held.
