This paper summarizes various definitions of Artificial Intelligence and provides a brief account of progress in the field. The origin and purpose of artificial intelligence is discussed. This paper also discusses a few of the many subcategories of research, applications and current technological obstacles that scientist face when developing AI. In particular, this paper overviews various specific military applications of AI. Finally, the paper provides discussion on the impact that the future of artificial intelligence may have on humans. The literature that exists regarding artificial intelligence shall also be examined briefly, and finally how it has affected humanity, particularly psychologically. Statement of topic Artificial Intelligence (AI) is often depicted by science fiction authors and scientists as potentially equal—or superior—to human intelligence. Yet this dream may remain elusive until machines attain the basic human virtue of common sense. Some of the leading experts and researchers in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) have tried to define the term or the subject. Phillip Jackson, in his book An Introduction to Artificial Intelligence (1985), defines AI research as ‘an attempt to discover and describe aspects of human intelligence that can be simulated by machines’ (Jackson, 1985). John McCarthy, one of the pioneer scientists in the field and the person believed to have coined the term ‘artificial intelligence’ defined the goal of AI as ‘to develop machines that behave as though they were intelligent.’ This definition, however, is insufficient because it does not comprehensively capture the intended purpose of AI; it is too general. The definition that best captures the definition of AI was given ... ... middle of paper ... ...l the cursor of a mouse by what they think and using their speech. The system, created at Washington University, enables people who have had damage to their speech because of a brain injury or who have limited mobility because of injury to use computers just as normal people would (Leuthardt, et al., 2011). Scientists currently try as much as possible to focus on solutions that help solve limitations that machines have, trying to improve them as much as possible. One good example is the research currently being undertaken by researchers to find easier ways in which soft robots used in search and rescue can move faster. As a result, the researchers have focused on the movement of different species of caterpillars, looking up to these soft-bodies caterpillars for inspiration on how to create more intelligent systems of robot locomotion (Lin, Leisk, & Trimmer, 2011).
these problems. The study of Intelligent Systems, often called “artificial intelligence” (AI), uses computation as a medium for simulating human perception, cognition, reasoning, learning, and action. In the case of artificial intelligence, the first thing that usually comes to mind is that AIs are convenient for mankind. It makes life much easier having the artificial intelligent systems to do people's works. Having artificial intelligence around not only cuts the tasks i... ... middle of paper .
Overview Way back in 1965, technologist Herbert Simon stated that, “Machines will be capable, within 20 years, of doing any work a man can do” (Vardi, 2012). Nearly fifty years later, this world has been impacted by artificial intelligence (AI) equipped technologies in major ways. The threat of AI equipped computer systems and machinery taking jobs away from humans is becoming a harsh reality (Vardi, 2012). As with every innovative technology there are positive and negative externalities involved
Artificial intelligence is the engineering of machines, especially computer programs that usually involve human intelligence. Artificial intelligence is using computers to understand human intelligence such as visual awareness, decision-making, and converting language. It could also be described as turning human intelligence into intelligence for machines and technology. The future capabilities of machines are dependent upon how well the machine can replicate human intelligence. Theorists who described
Artificial Intelligence Artificial intelligence or "AI" is the study of computer science that tries to enlighten and to imitate, through machine-driven or computational procedures, facets of human intelligence. Incorporated amid these aspects of intelligence are abilities to intermingle with the natural world across sensory methods and decision making abilities in unpredictable situations without human interference. Standard areas of exploration in AI consist of computer vision, game playing, learning
Artificial Intelligence Artificial Intelligence once something that people thought could only come out of science fiction novels and movies. But today that could all change because of a robot called Cog. Cog is an artificial intelligence that it’s creators have given a body. He is the future of AI and a new beginning for the field. His creator , Rogney Brooks, a professor of electrical engineering and computer science, thought of creating cog, from inspiration from an artificial intelligence
into Italian, summarize texts, or make us breakfast without burning down the house. But will computers ever become as intelligent as human beings? According to the website Science Fiction and Fantasy World, artificial intelligence (A.I.) can be defined as "the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems." (Moy, par. 2) This domain has predominantly been a field characterized by complex research in laboratory scale environments and just only recently has been
As Artificial intelligence, abbreviated as AI, becomes more and more complex, so do the concerns and stigma surrounding it. AI is defined by Merriam-Webster (n.d.) as "the capability of a machine to imitate intelligent human behavior." Between Siri, Spotify and Amazon suggestions, and spam filters on e-mail services, AI has already worked itself in our everyday lives. As AI progresses, we can see it used in self-driving vehicles, taking over tedious human jobs, or as a companion in life. AI worries
Scientists claim that devices with Artificial Intelligence will replace office workers during next 5 years (Maksimova).According to this statement it is possible to say that AI has a great influence on humanity. Pursuant to Oxford Dictionary Artificial Intelligence or AI is the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages(dictionary).Firstly
cross the divide between machine and human. Although the history of Artificial Intelligence (AI) began with these myths and speculations, it is becoming a part of everyday life. How did it evolve so quickly, and what are its implications for the future? Artificial Intelligence is “the capability of a machine to imitate intelligent human behavior.” Although the term was coined in 1955 by John McCarthy, stories about artificial beings with consciousness can be traced back to Ancient Greece. With each passing day, humans make great advancements in the world of technology. One of these advancements is the use of “artificial intelligence,” or computer systems that have the capability of performing tasks that would normally require human intelligence to accomplish. The various uses of “artificial intelligence” causes people to form opinions on it as a whole, often leading to debates on the topic. Authors like Susan Bennett, Neil Harbisson, Joi Ito, Garry Kasparov, Shauna Mei, Nnedi Ohorafor
Research about Artificial Intelligence Factors “For many centuries, one of the goals of humankind has been to develop machines. We envisioned these machines as performing all cumbersome and tedious tasks so that we might enjoy a more fruitful life” (Artificial Neural System 1). The Artificial Intelligence has brought a revolution and elevated technology to a very advanced level. The AI is also a part of Computer Science that add a smart brain by reactions and explanations to machines. Scientists
The idea of artificial intelligence has always been a very fascinating phenomenon among our society. It paved the way for a new genre in the entertainment industry that brought forth ideas of human like robots. In the acclaimed movie, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, an artificial intelligent robot of the future named David, designed to experience love, is sent to a family to replace their human comatose son. As the comatose son recovers, the family no longer need David. David, craving for the motherly
Artificial intelligence, a figment of our imaginations in the past, but a reality of our futures. As a kid, movies like Smart House and i, robot were just cool ideas that I never could have imagined would be real someday. Artificial intelligence has made false realities of the past, real. Joi Ito, Neil Harbisson, and the movie i, robot all discuss different views from which we can understand artificial intelligence. Through the views of Ito, Harbisson, and i, robot we can analyze how artificial intelligence
ambitious goal; that can further simplify computers. Artificial Intelligence, a system that can mimic human intelligence by performing task that usually only a human can do, usually has to use a form of natural language processing. Natural language processing, a sub-field of computer science and artificial intelligence, concerns the successfully interaction between a computer and a human. Currently one of the best examples of A.I.(Artificial Intelligence) is IBM 's Watson. A machine that gained popularity
