Is it love or comfort? Or maybe it 's just your imagination
The thought of using artificial intelligence to create romantic relationships with human beings have always been a controversial topic in society, but what is artificial intelligence? Its definition, defined by John McCarthy, is "the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs. It is related to the similar task of using computers to understand human intelligence, but AI does not have to confine itself to methods that are biologically observable" (McCarthy 2). However, the question that still lingers whether or not artificial intelligence can even be able to form a caring or romantic relationship with a human, similar to the relationship between Mr. Nomura and his partner Mikiko shared in the book, "Robopocalypse". The opinions of both Dr. Kevin Curran and Dr. Julie Carpenter regarding this issue have been very mixed with both believing there are positive and negative aspects; nevertheless, they both believe that using AI for love can be good and bad for society. Their studies on the topic had also brought my perspective to a neutral stance because these forms of AI relationships do benefit many individuals, but it can also have many harmful effects that can be very damaging in the long run.

On the subject of romantic relationships, Dr. Kevin Curran has spoken about a relationship of that nature with an AI as both harmful and beneficial toward human society. Dr. Curran believes it is inevitable to stop humans from becoming infatuated with an AI due to "many studies on human-robot interactions have shown participants prefer to interact with robots that have a similar personality to them" (the institute). He explains that...

...he AI was able to receive a positive outcome in them or in their lifestyle whether the outlook was a topic of love or comfort. Both experts have explained the negative outcomes that may arise when forming the relationship with AI to where the individual would experience a form of sadness or anger whether it 's in the form of realizing the love between them was false or unable to cope without an AI in their presence.
Though there were many pros and cons discussed on the use of forming a relationship with AI for comfort or romance styled relationships, each expert has kept a neutral stance on the issue by stating that they felt individuals would benefit from the aspects in both a good and bad way. By the same token, I have also kept a neutral stance since many of the benefits clashes with the concerns that have come up in both of the experts ' thoughts on the matter.

Artificial Intelligence And Human Intelligence Essay

- Artificial Intelligence “is the ability of a human-made machine to emulate or simulate human methods for the deductive and inductive acquisition and application of knowledge and reason” (Bock, 182). The And Of Artificial Intelligence Essay

- In a world where technology play a huge part of people’s lives, we would need to understand the “mind” behind systems such as Siri, Cortana, and other programs – known as artificial intelligence. There are two ways to think about the use and power of artificial intelligence. The Weak AI hypothesis states that a computer can simulate some mental activity and intelligent behavior. On the other hand, the Strong AI hypothesis states that a computer engaged in the right computations has a real mind. Essay about Artificial Intelligence Is Not All Ai Is Bad

- Artificial Intelligence has always been a very interesting subject to me from the time I watched any film from the Terminator series (1984-2015) with the evil A.I. known as Skynet. Not all AI is bad as we know from Steven Spielberg 's “A.I.” (2001) and today Artificial Intelligence is far from fiction. I’ve always wondered how close could we get to a world where Artificial Intelligence could become a companion, and in my research I have found that programmers and inventors are already working on a companion to ease the sense of loneliness we all feel from time to time....   [tags: Artificial intelligence, Computer]

Will Artificial Intelligence Replace Mankind? Essay

- From the first imaginative thought to manipulate nature to the development of complex astronomical concepts of space exploration, man continues to this day to innovate and invent products or methods that improve and enhance humankind. Though it has taken 150 million years to reach current day, the intellectual journey was not gradual in a linear sense. If one was to plot significant events occurring throughout human existence, Mankind’s ability to construct new ideas follows a logarithmic path, and is rapidly approaching an asymptote, or technological singularity....   [tags: Artificial Intelligence]
