There are many amazing artists that have made a huge impact on the art world through the art that they have created. As I am a huge art fan, and make art myself, it was very interesting but difficult to try and choose only one artist to talk about when there are so many out there. Of course, I could have talked about any other artist, and I am positive that many other students chose the same artist as me. But either way, one of the most famous, influential and most talked-about artists is Vincent van Gogh.
Vincent van Gogh was born in the Netherlands on 1853. At the age of 27 is when he truly began his interest in art and soon expanded it into a career, even though only having another 10 more years to live. While traveling to Paris in 1886 with his brother Theo, Vincent learned many knew techniques and movements of art which he later used in his own art work. It was not until the very last two and a half years of Vincent’s life that the world truly saw what he was capable of creating with his hands and mind, being in that state of mind in which he was really disturbed and his despair was deepening. Some of his mental and, as well as physical, health includes temporal lobe epilepsy, bipolar disorder and hypergraphia, according to Van Gogh Gallery, 2015.
In those last two and a half years of his life, Vincent painted one of the most beautiful and historic paintings that so many people, still to this day, appreciate, adore and love so much. ...to overlook a piece of art work and move on from there, not really knowing as to why an artist painted the way they did, and painting what they painted for a reason. There are individuals out there who do see the meaning behind the brushstrokes, the techniques, the overall picture, and they are left feeling somewhat with more insight to the world around them. I believe that so many people find his art work to be truly amazing and legendary because a variety of people can relate to how he felt, other than loving his art work and how they looked overall. As to many people relating to how he felt, The Starry Night, in my opinion does not represent death, even though Vincent ended up killing himself. I believe that it represents hope and brightness and that we should always keep reaching for our own stars, suns and cosmic energy even in the depths of our disturbed minds.
Vincent Van Gogh is one of the world’s greatest and most well-known artists, but when he was alive he considered himself to be a complete failure. It was not until after he died that Van Gogh’s paintings received the recognition they deserved. Today he is thought to be the second best Dutch artist, after Rembrandt. Coming from a family greatly involved in art dealing, Vincent van Gogh was destined to have a place in the world of art. Van Gogh’s unique techniques and use of color, which clashed and differed greatly from the masters of the art world of his time, would eventually gain him the recognition as one of the founders of modern art. Van Gogh’s early life was heavily influenced by the role of his father who was a pastor and chose to follow in his footsteps. Although he abandoned the desire to become a pastor, van Gogh remained a spiritual being and was strong in faith. Plagued with a troubled mind and poor health, van Gogh’s life became filled with torment and isolation that would influence his career in later life as an artist. In his late twenties, van Gogh had decided that it was God’s divine plan for him to become a painter. His works would express through thoughtful composition and vibrant color, the emotions that he was unable to manifest in the real world. Van Gogh’s perception of reality and his technique would face harsh criticism and never receive full acceptance from his peers as a serious artist during his brief career. In a collection of correspondence entitled The Letters of a Post-Impressionist, Vincent confirmed these thoughts while writing to his brother Theo, “It irritates me to hear people say that I have no "technique." It is just possible that there is no trace of it, because I hold myself aloof from all painters” (27). His technique would later be marveled and revered by the art world. Each artist is an individual with a unique style, and although these styles can be similar in practice – the individuality of the artist often proves the discriminating factor for a successful artwork. Self-portraits are beneficial when looking at the individuality of the artist as there are two aspects to look at – the artist’s style, and the artist’s view of him/herself. The latter can provide a brief insight into the mental situation of the artist as well as any apparent influencing factors of the artwork. This view can often also include fragmental insights into the society and culture of the time. Rembrandt van Rijn and Vincent van Gogh are 2 artists of whom are well represented by this statement.

Although he has many famous paintings, this one is the masterpiece that recognizes him as a gentleman. Many people say van Gogh was a madman, but it all comes from when he became ill. While only 37 years old, he spends most of his time in continuous creation and learning, I really admire his spirit. In the picture, van Gogh's eyes revealed melancholy and faith of what he believed in, which is why I fancy this painting.

As a child van Gogh attended the local school, he was later home school with his sister by his governess. From 1861 he went to Jan Provily's boarding school until 1866 then he attended Willem II collage where he was taught to draw by a well-known French artist, Constantijn C. Huysmans, and developed a love for it and deciding that he wanted to become an artist. In 1868 van Gogh dropped out of school. In 1869 van Gogh got a position with the art dealer Goupil and Cie, after being trained, in 1873 he was transferred to London and then transferred to Paris in 1875.
