Knowledge is nothing more than the systematic organization of facts. Facts are specific kinds of beliefs holding certain properties reliant on the definition of fact one chooses. Bertrand Russell once said, “Science tells us what we can know, but what we can know is little, and if we forget how much we cannot know we become insensitive to many things of great importance” (p 371). This quote means we are able to figure out some things using processes such as the scientific method; however, there is a certain limit to where you can use process to figure out what is proven is correct. History is based on primary and secondary sources. For history to occur there needs to be organized evidence, significance, and support explaining why certain things happened. George Orwell stated “Who controls the past controls the future, who controls the present controls the past” (p 417). These two areas of knowledge describe how the systematic organization of facts show what knowledge really is.
Professionals in natural sciences use a different set of ideas which include theories and study methods to prove reality. Paradigm is one systematic method in natural sciences people used to acquire knowledge. Perhaps the most famous process is the scientific method, which consists of a set of chronological steps in order to solve or come to a conclusion about a topic or question. One way professionals in natural sciences can obtain good and reliable information is to do a controlled experiment. These are experiments in which everything is held constant except for the variable under investigation. Math and science are more certain when it comes to knowledge because you can physically see how you got the answer. In history it is a little bit different, certainty can be found in the tangible objects and in stories I which are well supported and have little to no questioning. Bias ideas are a huge part of history which is why not all history is certain. The limitations to acquiring knowledge in history are all the problems of bias and cultural perspectives and the approach one takes when learning history.
Knowledge is nothing more than the systematic organization of facts and it is proven in every single subject. The certainty of knowledge may vary depending on some factors, but for the most part what can be supported with good evidence is legitimate.
