The character of the story Sethe is a satisfied and moral woman. She is determined to stitch a decent bridal costume for the upcoming major event in the evening with Halle. Sethe desires to steal food from the restaurant than wait in line. Sethe’s most outstanding personality would be her commitment to her children. She does not want her children to go through the emotional pain she suffered as a slave. At one point she attempts to slaughter them thinking that is best for them. Everyday she reminiscences the painful performances that she experienced as a slave that can never be destroyed. Sethe’s anxiety from the pain indicates her to disregard the devastating indication that Beloved is the re-creation of her dead daughter. Later on she recognizes Beloved’s character and still is affected by the past. This is because she surrenders to Beloved’s requests and permits herself to be inspired by Beloved. Sethe will only be peaceful if she simply lets go of the past and begins to live freely in the present-day. Yes, we should identify with Sethe in this novel. Beloved developed from a baby to monstrosity due to her murder. In the novel, Beloved, the author Toni Morrison allows the reader to indulge in the life of the former slave mother, Sethe, and her family’s fight in the path to free themselves from their past lives. Throughout the novel, Sethe reveals that she had done the horror of killing her child Beloved because she did not want Beloved to live the life of slavery as she did. Sethe emerges as a universal figure, drawing together the disparate parts of the Creator, the Son and the Holy Spirit. At the end of the novel, Morrison claims that “This is not a story to pass on” (324); however, her use of timeless imagery refutes that idea. From the beginning, Beloved focuses on the import of memory and history. Sethe struggles daily with the haunting legacy of slavery, in the form of her threatening memories and also in the form of her daughter’s aggressive ghost. For Sethe, the present is mostly a struggle to beat back the past, because the memories of her daughter’s death and the experiences at Sweet Home are too painful for her to recall consciously. But Sethe’s repression is problematic, because the absence of history and memory inhibits the construction of a stable identity. Even Sethe’s hard-won freedom is threatened by her inability to confront her prior life. Paul D’s arrival gives Sethe the opportunity and the impetus to finally come to terms with her painful life history.
Body A: Blood to blood relations often hold a considerable amount of care and love for each other. First of all, the development of the relationship between Sethe and Denver shows how blood to blood relations carry the care and love that no other person would carry. In the novel Beloved, Denver was the daughter and one and only person in Sethe’s family. The house 124 in Bluestone Road had only two residents, Sethe and Denver. Both Sethe and Denver created an amazingly strong bond between each other. In Sethe’s whole life, she only saw people getting away from her, her husband Halle, her mother-in-law Baby Suggs, and her two sons Howard and Buglar. However, Denver was the only person who was staying with her all the time. The care shown by Denver for her mother is incredible. She is one of those daughters who would sacrifice anything for her mother. Denver gets emotional when she remembers that she has no friends and she does not know any another residents around their house. However, she buries all her emotions and sorrows when she reminisces that she has her mother with her who brought her to this world. Her mother fills her heart with everything. She knows that her mother Sethe sacrificed a lot when she was an infant. Sethe also informed Denver how she fought against many obstructions when Denver was in her mother’s womb. All these situations made them valuable to each other. As a mother, Sethe has done astonishing activities which made Sethe a star in Denver’s eyes. The love and sacrifices from Sethe for her daughter Denver is illustrated in the following quote,
Toni Morrison's novel, Beloved, reveals the effects of human emotion and its power to cast an individual into a struggle against him or herself. In the beginning of the novel, the reader sees the main character, Sethe, as a woman who is resigned to her desolate life and isolates herself from all those around her. Yet, she was once a woman full of feeling: she had loved her husband Halle, loved her four young children, and loved the days of the Clearing. And thus, Sethe was jaded when she began her life at 124 Bluestone Road-- she had loved too much. After failing to 'save' her children from the schoolteacher, Sethe suffered forever with guilt and regret. Guilt for having killed her "crawling already?" baby daughter, and then regret for not having succeeded in her task. It later becomes apparent that Sethe's tragic past, her chokecherry tree, was the reason why she lived a life of isolation. Beloved, who shares with Seths that one fatal moment, reacts to it in a completely different way; because of her obsessive and vengeful love, she haunts Sethe's house and fights the forces of death, only to come back in an attempt to take her mother's life. Through her usage of symbolism, Morrison exposes the internal conflicts that encumber her characters. By contrasting those individuals, she shows tragedy in the human condition. Both Sethe and Beloved suffer the devastating emotional effects of that one fateful event: while the guilty mother who lived refuses to passionately love again, the daughter who was betrayed fights heaven and hell- in the name of love- just to live again.
Sethe is the most dramatically haunted in the book. She is the one who was beaten so badly her back is permanently scarred. She is the one who lived and escaped slavery. She is the one who murdered her child rather than return it to slavery. So she is the one whose past is so horrible that it is inescapable. How can a person escape the past when it is physically apart of them? Sethe has scars left from being whipped that she calls a "tree". She describes it as "A chokecherry tree. Trunk, branches, and even leaves. Tiny little chokecherry leaves. But that was eighteen years ago. Could have cherries too now for all I know" (16). It is apt that her past is represented on her back--something that is behind her, something she cannot see but knows that is there. Also it appeared eighteen years ago, but Sethe thinks that it may have grown cherries in those years. Therefore she knows that the past has attached itself to her but the haunting of it has not stopped growing. Paul D. enters Sethe's life and discover a haunting of Sethe almost immediately. He walks into 124 and notices the spirit of the murdered baby: "It was sad. Walking through it, a wave of grief soaked him so thoroughly he wanted to cry" (9). The haunting by Beloved in its spirit form is stopped by Paul D. He screams "God damn it! Hush up! Leave the place alone! Get the Hell out!" (18). But Sethe's infant daughter is her greatest haunt and it is when Beloved arrives in physical form that Sethe is forced to turn around and confront the past.

In Toni Morrison’s novel, Beloved, Morrison uses universal themes and characters that anyone can relate to today. Set in the 1800s, Beloved is about the destructive effects of American slavery. Most destructive in the novel, however, is the impact of slavery on the human soul. Morrison’s Beloved highlights how slavery contributes to the destruction of one’s identity by examining the importance of community solidarity, as well as the powers and limits of language during the 1860s.
