Some people assume that all vegetarians protest and fight the meat industry. In most cases this is not true. Vegitarian are people who either are just trying to live a healthier lifestyle or people who disagree with how food today is processed. The health risks involving vegetarianism are the main concern that people have when considering the practice. The daunting question of how anyone could possibly survive without meat has cause many controversies throughout history. It is not a foreign concept, but in most circumstances, it is treated like one. In today’s world, there is almost always a fix to any problem we have, but when people do not look for a solution they have a hard time accepting the choices others make. Even though there are health risks associated with the vegetarian lifestyle, it is a brilliant practice accepted by many people.
Being a vegetarian is not just someone who does not eat meat. There are many kinds of vegetarians and reasons why people are vegetarians. According to “Becoming a Vegetarian,” vegans do not eat meat, poultry, fish or any products derived from animals including eggs, dairy products and gelatin. Lacto-ovo do not eat meat, poultry, or fish but do eat eggs and dairy products. Lacto vegetarians do not eat meat, poultry, fish, or eggs, but do consume dairy products (Harvard). In other words, being a vegetarian is not an all or nothing situation. Someone could customize what they want or do not want to eat to fit their reason for not wanting to eat it. People become vegetarians for many different reasons. It could be religious reasons such as the Jewish religion practices a type of vegetarianism by only eating a kosher diet which consists of the avoidance pork, rabbit, horse, frogs and shellfish...

The process of killing and eating is an ancient practice, one that is not changing anytime soon, but the choices people make to be a part of that process should be their own. Scott and Rushing state that “Some might say the most positive element of [the South’s] collective character is sometimes referred to as soul food.” It isn’t just the south; the whole world’s culture is dependent on the food they eat. The world as we know it is consumed by what goes into our bodies. No matter what the reason for being vegetarian is, it should be a personal choice that people make for themselves.
