“A hero is someone who understands the responsibility that comes with [their] freedom” (Dylan). However, though heroes face complications throughout their quest, in the end they often accomplish an important rask. In the book, Like Water for Chocolate, the main character, Tita shows a perfect example of a hero. Tita is in a continuous emotional quest throughout the entire story, but proves along the way she is indeed one who will not fail. Many characteristics of a hero certainly fit Tita’s character, however, there are some very important ones, she: suffers an unusual childbirth, yields a special weapon, goes through a traumatic event that leads to an adventure, has supernatural help, experiences atonement with mother, and when she dies she is rewarded spiritually.
Tita emulates the standard archetypal hero’s unusual circumstances of birth with her own atypical birth immediately in the beginning of the novel. Almost instantaneously after being introduced to Tita, she “made her entrance into this world, prematurely” (Esquivel 5). A premature birth is certainly abnormal, but it is not the only thing that makes Tita’s birth unique. The cause of her premature birth, in fact, was that “her wailing got so violent that it brought on early labor” (Esquivel 5). Her ability to bring about her own birth coincides with the idea of an unusual birth. It is however, extended even more so when the narrator tells the reader that Tita was “literally washed into this world on a great tide of tears” (Esquivel 6). While not being the most dazzling introduction of a character, it exemplifies the importance and individuality of Tita. Of the elements of an archetypal hero, an unusual birth is crucial because it will often deliver to the reader what a ...

From the exposition to the denouement of Like Water For Chocolate, the character Tita represents an archetypal hero. One knows so owing to the fact that Tita experiences an unusual birth, wields a special weapon, experiences a traumatic event, receives supernatural help, atones for her mother’s wrongdoings, and is rewarded spiritually at the end of her life. Overall, Tita is not the most glamorous hero, but she fit’s the archetype nearly perfectly. Given this, it is important for one to remember that the subtleties of a character do, in reality, often represent the elements of an archetype. In finding these items, the reader may find deeper meaning within most any story, and Like Water for Chocolate does not stand as an exception.

Carl Jung justifies a hero as a figure who: “undergoes tremendous suffering for some great heroic purpose. Some suffering figures reach a level of heroic transcendence in a victory over adversity in their own limitation.” (Carl Jung) Mariam’s scarification of her life to help others and by living everyday in fear shows representation of the hero. Mariam character provides emotional attachment and hope. Her actions reflect of the everyday life that an Afghan woman suffers from on a day to day basis. The heroism is
What is a hero? The book Mythology by Edith Hamilton has a lot of heroes and most of them have 2 things in common. The heroes are in their own ways superior whether it be strength, intelligence, and/or courage. The second thing they have in common is a quest that establishes their greatness and proving that they are good enough to be called heroes. The catch is that even though they may have the characteristics of a hero, not all of them are epic heroes.
The word "hero" is so often used to describe people who overcome great difficulties and rise to the challenge that is set before them without even considering the overwhelming odds they are up against. In our culture, heroes are glorified in literature and in the media in various shapes and forms. However, I believe that many of the greatest heroes in our society never receive the credit that they deserve, much less fame or publicity. I believe that a hero is simply someone who stands up for what he/she believes in. A person does not have to rush into a burning building and save someone's life to be a hero. Someone who is a true friend can be a hero. A hero is someone who makes a difference in the lives of others simply by his/her presence. In Tim O'Brien's novel, The Things They Carried, the true heroes stand out in my mind as those who were true friends and fought for what they believed in. These men and women faced the atrocities of war on a daily basis, as explained by critic David R. Jarraway's essay, "'Excremental Assault' in Tim O'Brien: Trauma and Recovery in Vietnam War Literature" and by Vietnam Veteran Jim Carter. Yet these characters became heroes not by going to drastic measures to do something that would draw attention to themselves, but by being true to their own beliefs and by making a difference to the people around them.
In summary, the aspects of a hero are being adroit, caring, and tenacious. A modern mother and Odysseus both display these traits. Odysseus witnessed his men being killed by the Cyclopes when he was on his way home from Troy, but a mom would do anything to save her children. No matter who a person is, they’re still a hero because a hero is someone that never gives up. A hero doesn’t have to be strong or smart; they just have to be themselves. A hero can be anyone, like an average mom or a famous soldier. In life, every single person is hero; whether they saved a life or saved a soul.
What is a hero? Many people think instantly about, police officers, fire fighters, or perhaps a person that saves the day such as “Batman” or “superman”, but in reality a hero are not just people that save the day or other from harm. A hero can also be your parent, or parents that are there for you through your good and bad or even right and wrong days; or your brother or sister that perhaps worry about you and is determine to teach you well, this way you do not commit the same mistake they once did or saw growing up. The novel “In the time of the butterflies” the three sisters are known to be hero’s for standing up and sticking to their beliefs. But a hero is not only those that die for their country or others, it takes a
Dictionaries’ definitions of the word hero are exceedingly vague. A standard dictionary limits the definition of a hero to, “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities” (Dictionary.com). Heroes are people, not just men, who are generous, courageous, and take every event as part of the whole stream of life rather than as a critical moment. Humanity, endurance, and perseverance are other critical characteristics of a deserving candidate for such a title. John Steinbeck’s novel, The Grapes of Wrath, does an excellent job of defining a hero through the character, Ma Joad. As the Joad clan disintegrated under the pressure of dispossession and migration, Ma emerged as a central, cohesive force. Maintaining her composure, she heroically led the family on their journey towards the dream of a better life.
“The Hero’s Journey.” Ariane Publications, 1997. Course handout. AS English I. Dept. of English, Woodside High School. 26 October 2013.
The word hero as defined as an “individual who has the courage of conviction to perform feats that benefit the general populace, acts as a soldier of virtue, and has an altruistic spirit that urges him or her to act against evil and defend the greater good at all costs, even sacrificing his own well-being or life.” (Harrison 2). Although heroes can come in any shape and size they are commonly found in stories we read, movies we watch, or people we look up to. We do not think about it much but even our own life is made up of many hero’s journeys. We never realize that our hardships and how we overcome them is exactly what a Hero’s Journey is about and why we relate to and enjoy these stories so much. I will be going into the depths of a Hero’s
What is a hero? Is it a superhero we see on tv? Or is it an ordinary person doing extraordinary things? A hero can be many things to different people. In Homer’s Odyssey, a character named Telemachus is left to lead his father’s kingdom while he is gone at sea. He had to take on something much bigger than himself even though he wasn’t very prepared. In my journey, I went through something similar. I had to take on something much bigger than myself and learn how to stick up to others when I felt small and not confident. In fourth grade, I was bullied. It was a very hard time in my life, but it has helped shape me into the better person I am today. I learned a lot about myself from this journey. I learned on how to take on anything that was given to me even if I wasn’t prepared. I learned how to stick up for myself and become my own hero.
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary a hero is an individual who is admired for great bravery or fine qualities. To me a hero is so much more than a person who shows great bravery. When I think of a hero many fine qualities come to mind; intelligence, courage, altruism, compassion and great bravery.
Heroes. Everyone wants to be a hero, but sometimes, people lose sight of what a true hero really is. It does not have to be someone who flies around and saves innocent people from perilous monsters. A hero is simply someone that inspires others. In Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Junior was a hero because he rose above the expectations the world placed on him through his courage, passionate determination, and sympathetic perception.
According to Joseph Campbell, “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” Everyone imagines heroes differently. Heroes do not always have to have supernatural abilities. They can simply be regular people who make a difference in someone’s life. Peeta, from the Hunger Games Trilogy, is a hero in his own way. Peeta was just a regular young man until he was forced to go into the arena and fight until the death on live television. Peeta did not know the effect he was going to have. Peeta gave people hope and faith. Peeta did not try to become a hero, but the choices he made are what led him to be known as a hero.
Her lionhearted clothes reflected her valiant and strong attitude. However – Elisa Allen hid her true feelings. She was deceitful in interpersonal communication. Her tongue spilled bittersweet black smut like that of industrialized coal engines. However – it was compassionate, her concern and subtle behavior.
