Aquinas says there are two different types of existence. One existence is essential such as the fact that man exists. The second existence is accidental, such as man is white. For each of the two existence there is something in potency. What this means is that in the essential existence there is potency to be man as in sperm that creates man. On the other hand, for accidental existence there is potency to be white as in man. Just because both existences have potency in common doesn’t mean they are similar, they do differ. Potency to the substantial existence is called matter. Matter and subject are not the same because matter is something that it turns out to be. "Just as everything which is in potency can be called matter, so also everything from which something has existence whether that existence be substantial or accidental, can be called form; for example man, since he is white in potency, becomes actually white through whiteness, and sperm, since it is man in potency, becomes actually man through the soul." Man is created by sperm and the process of a human developing and getting his characteristics is through existence.

Aquinas has been recognized throughout the years for his work and teachings with the distinction between philosophy and theology. Aquinas is very definitive in his principles of “being” and “existience” and the variances among the two. His ultimate argument to share is not all substances are material, for example God is not. This is not to be taken as God does not exist and can be further explained through the three Articles. It is evident that things become to exist and not in existence in nature. Aquinas shares there must also be something which is to all beings the cause of their being, goodness, and every other perfection; and this we call God. Through his works cited, Aquinas defines God’s existence, the moral life of man and Christ to instruct both beginner and experts in all matters of the Christian Truth.
