For us to understand the importance of knowledge, we first have to understand what knowledge is. Knowledge can be given to us by experience with something new or it can be acquired through. There is always a purpose for acquiring the information. There is a saying that “knowledge is power.” If you think practically, then knowledge is definitely giving you power to dictate your direction in life. There is a complex process through which a person acquires knowledge, and it depends on the mental capacity of a person as to how much knowledge he can acquire. In Plato’s Republic, we can see what knowledge does for the man in the allegory of the cave. In this story knowledge was acquired by an experience. In Aristotle’s Nichomachean Ethics, we learn what the ultimate intellectual virtues are and that wisdom is the highest of all. Knowledge from Plato and wisdom form Aristotle can be connected through the achievement of intellect. Aristotle and Plato have different views on it but it all comes down to the fact that the acquisition of these leads to an ultimate good in life.
The Allegory of the Cave illustrated to us by Socrates has many meanings. The allegory explains the effects of knowledge on a person and understanding reality. Knowledge is power whether it’s leaving a cave to learn about life, furthering your education or just learning something new. Knowledge is everything. Intellectual virtues are what help us come to good choices and the choices that benefit us and mankind the right way. The five intellectual virtues all have their role to play, and each parallels to a one of the parts of the soul. Our lives are constructed by our intellectual virtues when you think of them in the aspect that Aristotle brings them out. We either can build ourselves to happiness using the intellectual virtues the ethical way or we can ruin our lives by using them the immoral way.
Plato’s ‘Allegory of the Cave’ rotates around the notion of our vision as humans being limited, and only being exposed to a certain extent of knowledge within our surroundings. The Allegory of the Cave presented a rare case where prisoners were trapped in a cave for all their lives with hands, neck and feet bound to look at a wall with shadows beings casted by a fire that lies behind them. Once a prisoner breaks free of the binds, his curiosity allows him to follow the light that then exposes him to the real world where he is blinded by the sun. Each of the elements in the allegory are symbols that can be related to modern day situations as metaphors. Though society has evolved drastically, many struggles that we face today resemble the allegory.
Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” is a story being told by Socrates to Plato’s brother, Glaucon. Socrates tells of prisoners in an underground cave who are made to look upon the front wall of the cave. To the rear of the prisoners, below the protection of the parapet, lie the puppeteers whom are casting the shadows on the wall in that the prisoners are perceiving reality. Once a prisoner is free, he's forced to look upon the fire and objects that once determined his perception of reality, and he so realizes these new pictures before of him are now the accepted forms of reality. Plato describes the vision of the real truth to be "aching" to the eyes of the prisoners, and the way they might naturally be inclined to going back and viewing what they need perpetually seen as a pleasing and painless acceptance of truth. This stage of thinking is noted as "belief."
In Republic Book VII, Socrates and Glaucon discuss the effects of being educated by using the allegory of the cave as an example of some sort of society that's brought up with an ignorant view of the world, and their reaction to information that's brought back in that completely contradicts their world view. In that passage, Socrates suggests that we’re prisoners to our senses and are only able to perceive some fuzzy image of the real world, but that we can only escape if we really want to go beyond our senses. Having freedom equals having the power to think, to speak, and to act without externally imposed restrains. As a matter of fact, finding freedom in order to live free is the common idea in Plato with "The Allegory of the Cave"; Henry David Thoreau with " Where I lived and What I lived for"; and Jean Paul Sartre with " Existentialism". Generally, Plato, Thoreau, and Sartre suggested that human life should be free. They differ in what that freedom is. Plato thinks it is found in the world of intellect, Thoreau thinks freedom is found in nature, and Sartre thinks freedom is found in subjectivity of individual.
Throughout Plato 's story "The Allegory of the cave" men are stuck in this cave with their backs turned away from the light, until one day a man turns towards the light and learns for himself what the light is about.
