The use of Project Management is becoming more common in today’s organizations. The meaning of Project Management is the use of expertise, skills, and methods to accomplish the requirements for the project(s) (McGraw-Hill Education, 2013). In my current work environment, we rely on extensive research, customer service, and conflict resolution, and technology implementation. As a first-time small business owner and research assistant, Project Management is important: “effective project management begins with selecting and prioritizing projects that support the firm’s mission and strategy” (McGraw-Hill Education, 2013). My employees and I are continuously working on new projects. I can apply Project Management Principles in my current work environment by ensuring that my team has a clear set of goals that allows us to track our progress concerning the projects that we are working on. We all take part in defining, planning, and managing our projects, therefore clear goals help us specify the directions of our plans. I can also apply these principles to better understand the changes and goals in my current work environment, as well as prioritize the projects based the goals of the organization. Furthermore, applying Project Management principles to projects is important because the principles help to direct my team regarding the establishment and goals of our project. After learning the major characteristics of a project, I was able to share this information with my co-workers. We learned that there are five major characteristics of a project such as: a set objective, a well-defined life-span, the participation of different departments and experts in an organization, and a project is also unique, and lastly inclu... ... middle of paper ... ...material, I learned that communicating, planning, setting goals, and prioritizing are all essential for successful projects. In addition, I understand different organizational strategies, and ways to improve the initiation of a project. All of the knowledge that I gained will help me to become a leader, and I will be able to incorporate my knowledge in my work environment. I am going to implement the knowledge that I gained into my job description. Crawford (2000) suggests that project leadership is the highest ranking category among project management competence factors. Project management leadership style affects overall project performance. Recent research supports the idea that successful projects are led by individuals who possess not only a blend of technical and management knowledge, but also leadership skills that are internally compatible with the motivation of the project team (Slevin and Pinto, 1988; Turner et al., 1998). Zimmerer and Yasin (1998) found that positive leadership contributed almost 76% to the success of projects. Negative or poor leadership contributed 67% to the failure of projects. Project leaders need both, relationships and task oriented leadership styles, to cope with the challenges within different phases of project (Slevin and Pinto, 1991). In projects, project leaders must lead their teams towards completing defined goals with in a fixed time scale. A project is a defined as a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result (Larson, 2014). The characteristics of a project in the context of project management include an established objective, a defined life span with a start and finish, the involvement of a collection of different departments and other professionals, non-static with innovations of new ideas/processes, a clearly defined budget and specified requirements (Laron, 2014).
In today's business it is in the best interest of companies to have project managers. Common sense isn't always easily accomplished. Anyone who's ever worked on a project in a technical setting knows this. Indeed, much of working with others consists of solving unexpected problems and learning from mistakes along the way. Knowing this and having the proper tools a project manager will be able to manage and complete the most intense project out there.
The projects in today’s world are given a lot of importance and it will continue to grow in the coming years. There are a lot of companies which do not have production, but all of them do have projects. There are a lot of books which have been published on which related to planning and managing the projects. The one of the most important one was published by the author Eli Goldratt in his book ‘Critical chain’. This book basically talks and shows how the application of theory of constraints in the field of project management. The novel is basically based on one of the MBA classes in America where a number of ideas are developed in discussions among the students and the lecturers. The lecturer is basically fighting for a tenure with the president of the university who expects a downturn in the executive MBA. The lecturer who teaches project management has a word with one the senior colleagues and project management was the right topic to teach.
