”As a Law Enforcement Officer, my fundamental duty is to serve mankind; to safeguard lives and property; to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the Constitutional rights of all men to liberty, equality, and justice.” This is first and most important sentence of the code of ethics that every law enforcement officer has to obey and follow throughout his career. For me, it's actually the complete opposite, my father is actually a person who has had felonies in his past. Without a doubt my father has changed his life around, from being a felon to going to jail and preaching to inmates about God. He has showed me the type of man I should be growing up. He is the person who encouraged me into law enforcement. Unfortunately with his record, he isn't able to get a job in law enforcement, but as a kid growing up that was always his dream, he wanted to work for the Border Patrol or DEA. His life experiences such as seeing his brother killed by the Cartel made huge impacts in his life that he knew he wanted to make a difference. But ultimately he did make mistakes that will never allow him to follow his dreams. That’s where I come in, his oldest son that he directs and is always helping me pursue my dream of law enforcement. This program is made for kids who at a young age know that law enforcement is something they want to do in the future. It gives you a step over everyone else who wants to become a law enforcement officer, but was never in the program. The program is once a week for 2hrs, throughout the two hours of a meeting you learn discipline, do lots of physical training, and get taught by Sheriffs the things they learn while in the academy. This program not only taught me a lot, but made me realize that this was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I was interested from the moment I joined in the moment I had to move on. At 20 I was hired as a Cadet with Laguna Beach police Department. This is where I learned the most, hands on work with detectives at the police department. This is where I get to see things come into place. I see cases from scratch, work their way into arrest warrants and see criminals go behind bars. The detectives trust me with so much that they show me everything they deal with and everything they do to catch criminals. I work side by side with them getting anything they need, from booking evidence to helping them find criminals. This job has shown me where I will be in the future and has opened up so many opportunities for me. These programs have shown me what police officers and deputies actually go through in a daily basis. It’s not a TV show or a movie it’s real

It was not until the age of 10 that I said to myself that I wanted to be a police officer or something in that field. During my years in junior high one of the officers who worked there told me about a program called police explorers, once he explained the program to me I knew that that was what I wanted to do: police work. A week after I turned fourteen I decided to join the Costa Mesa Police explorer program, in order to get I accepted to the program I had to attend four consecutive meetings and on my fourth meeting I was given an application the following week I was interviewed by four police officer; it was scary. This program has taught me many lessons such as responsibility, respect, integrity and many other qualities that one must have to be considered eligible for police work.

A police officer’s duty is to maintain public order, preventing, and detecting crime. The concept of police officers, also known as cops, and law enforcement has been around ever since the ancient Romans had a theory that an organization of “peacekeepers” would reduce the crime and violence being committed. This theory stuck with society and is still around today. People of law enforcement have a mission when they step into their police car, that mission is to enforce the rules of conduct or law. Of course, accomplishing this mission can be dangerous. Often when a cop leaves his or her house to go to work worries start to set it, such as “will I be coming back home when my day is over” or “will a simple traffic stop go sour and someone ends up dead?” These thoughts are apart of the stress that comes with the job and most people are trained to deal with this stress.
Going forward in my field of study post TCU, I had never really given sincere thought as to where I might land a profession in the field of criminal justice. The department is such a vast field, with flourishing resources that are critical to carrying out the laws. Initially, I was attracted to the therapeutic/rehabilitative side of criminal justice as a juvenile counselor or probation facilitator. I enjoying helping others and being an active listener, through skills and methods acquired from my minor in Communication Studies. Upon entering internship, my eyes were opened to all the field opportunities present that are often overlooked. Police work is not an easy task, and actually challenges individual physical/mental stability. My process as an intern began with me being stationed at the Fort Worth police academy. During my time at the academy, I got to know a lot of the officers on a one on one basis. During our conversations, I would notice that each of the men and women were drawn toward the field for their own personal beliefs or goals. It was during my first task at the academy, that I developed an inside look to the pros of law enforcement.
There are many duties that come along with being a police officer. It’s not just about wearing the uniform, driving the nice car, and arresting people. They heck for any law violations, respond to radio calls, watch for anything suspicious going on, and they also need to investigate any dangerous conditions that could harm anyone.
A law enforcement officer, one who is honest and dedicated to his profession, has to remain in perfect physical and mental condition, and never let his guard down. He has to survive on black coffee and half-eaten meals and be able to deal with heinous crimes, coax a confession out of a hardened criminal, and be a source of comfort to a victim's family. He should never complain about working late and should earn the respect of his family and friends.
In the past eight years as a police officer for the City of South Salt Lake, I have found that personal growth and achievement in my career have been based on certain past experiences. Such experiences have molded what my personality is today. I have found that in order to be triumphant in my personal and professional goals, it has been necessary for me to reflect not only on my strides, but also my mistakes.
It took less than 20 minutes for me to realize my dream career at the ripe age of 15. From helping other bystanders detain and stop a man from beating his estranged wife to watching the “Sheep Dogs” as they are called, come running in and saving the day. I knew then and there what I wanted to do as a career but being so young, I truly didn’t know what the career entailed. Being a Police Officer in the modern day America is one of the hardest jobs to do. Day in and day out they must put on different masks and become protectors, friends, lawyers, doctors, counselors and so much more. It’s a fun and rewarding career, it’s where your zone partners don’t just become friends but they become family. You sure aren’t going to become rich but you don’t
