Applications of Fertilisers
Plants, like people, need regular feeding. If the balance of essential substances in the body of the plant is broken - it starts to get sick and may die. To maintain this balance at the required level, you can by adding various fertilizers. What is the fertiliser? Fertilizers – are substances used to improve plant nutrition, soil properties, and to increase the harvest. This essay will be about the description of the soils; types of fertilisers and reasons for using them; a description of a specific use of fertilisers to solve a soil quality problem.
Generally soil is composed of:
1. Mineral oil (50-60% of total)
2. The organic substance (5-10%)
3. Air (15-25%)
4. Water (25-35%)
There are 6 types of soils:
Sandy - The size of grains are divided into classes : very large ( more than 3.5 mm) and large ( 3.0-3.5 mm ), medium ( 2.0-2.5 mm ) , small ( 1.5-2.0 mm ), very small ( 1.0-1.5 mm ) , thin ( 0.7-1.0 mm ), very thin ( 0.7 mm). Sand is the only type of soil that has the largest particles in compare with other five types of soil.
Silty- contains proteins, fats, carbohydrates, nitrogen, phosphorus, bacteria Coli per 1g of dry substance. However, the composition silt depends on the composition of the wastewater, the purification schemes and other factors.
Clay- when it is wet it will stick to your hands but when it is dry it won’t. Here are the main minerals that clay contains: kaolinite, andalusite, kyanite and sillimanite, halloysite, gibbsite, diasporas, aluminum oxide, monotermit, montmorillonite, muscovite, nacrite, pyrophyllite.

Mississippi has a variety of different soils .The three general soils are 1) the river flood plain, known as the Delta, 2) a loess region, or bands of soils formed in windblown material that adjoins the Delta, and 3) Coastal Plain. The Mississippi Delta is better for growing row crop, while the loess and Coastal Plain region are better for animal production and forestry. The loess and Coastal Plain regions are divided based on similar soils, geology, climate, water resources, and land use called Major Land Resource Areas. The Mississippi Delta’s soil comes from sediments left by flooding various rivers in the region, rather than being a typical Delta formed by the mouth of a river. In the Delta most of the land is farmed, with three-fourths of the cropland to the north. Controlling surface water and drainage are major soil management issues. In the Delta soils are naturally diverse because of their alluvial origin. Particle sizes within the sediment decrease as distance from the originating stream increase. Another factor in Delta soil formation us surface water movement over time, because soils that formed under standing water have different properties than soils formed under moving water. Soils with large amounts of clay particles have unique features. When the soil is dry, small round aggregates form at the surface that look like shotgun buckshot, which is where the popular name for Delta clay soils “buckshot” came from. It can also affect the water resources nearby. Nitrogen, Phosphate, and Potassium are the basics of fertilizer. If a certain nutrient is short in supply the fertilizer might not work as well. Soil is a natural resource that is vital for living things. Soil is defined as an incoherent mineral and organic material that works as a natural element for the survival of living things. Retallack et al. (1984) proposed that soil is a “material at the surface of a planet or similar body, altered in place by physical chemical or biological agencies, or by a combination of them” (p. 7). Malaysia’s average temperature ranges from 20 degree Celsius to 30 degree Celsius with rainfall generally distributed throughout the year. Lim and Samah (2004) mentioned that soil is formed efficiently in Malaysia due to Malaysia’s climate and temperature. Tay (1969) supports that efficient rainfall distribution contributed to soil weathering throughout the year (p. 59). It is important for mankind to differentiate the varieties of soils, in order for sustainable management as soils take years to form. Shamshuddin J. (2010) identifies the major types of soil order in Malaysia are Histosols, Ultisols and Oxisols. (refer to Figure 1 in Appendix 1).

Clay can be composed of any inorganic materials, such as clay minerals, allophane, quartz, feldspar, zeolites, and iron hydroxides, that possess a sufficiently fine grain size. Along with organic matter, water, and air, clays are one of the four main components of soil. Physical properties of clay include plasticity when wet, the ability to form colloidal suspensions when dispersed in water, and the tendency to clump together (flocculate) and settle out in saline water. Establishments that fall within the Structural Clay Products Industry (SIC code 325) are primarily engaged in using different types of clay and other additives to manufacture brick and structural clay tile, ceramic wall and floor tile, clay firebrick and other heat-resisting products, and clay sewer pipe. The mining of clay used to make structural clay products are not included within SIC code 32.
