The Bible provides a number of excellent principles about the importance of good communication in life. It teaches that honest, open communication and wisely spoken words have the power to bring healing and restoration, whereas poorly spoken words have the potential to cause divisions, drive wedges between people and even start wars. It’s important to remember that once a word is spoken, it can never be taken back. Therefore, one must choose their words wisely. Importance of Effective Communication
Knowing how to communicate effectively is one of the most essential skills in life. Good communication fosters healthy relationships by creating a trusting atmosphere where people can mutually express their needs, desires, and concerns with
Good communication is the foundation of strong relationships which involves not only speaking, but also listening (Pearson, Nelson, Titsworth, & Harter, 2013). Sometimes during conversations, I fail to listen attentively or I will change the subject entirely, offering the speaker little to no feedback about what was said.
I am now personally more aware of the impact that poor communication has on relationships. Therefore, I am going to become a more effective listener. Listening is more than hearing, it means receiving and understanding information in a way that is meaningful and relevant to another person and attempting to understand their point of view as if it were your own (Pearson et al., 2013). Only 7% of communication consists of words, while 55% is attributed to body language and 38% to tone of voice (Economy, 2015, para. 4). Becoming a more effective listener will be accomplished by engaging in perception to ensure my perceptions match those of the speaker. In addition, asking questions and paraphrasing will help to clarify understanding and interpretation of the speaker’s message (Pearson et al., 2013). Furthermore, I will pay greater attention to the speaker’s body language, non-verbal behavior, and ask more open-ended questions to ensure they lead more of the
