1. What experiences have you had which prepare you for this position (e.g perhaps as an employee, leader, or working with people different from yourself, etc)?
Working with different people is one of things I am excited about being a RA. As I met different people with different cultures, beliefs and worked together in the past, I am certain I know how to interact with them. These experiences taught me how to interact people different from me flexibly, how to withstand pressure and how to use differences as strength. Moreover I have taken several leadership positions before so benefits from those positions would be useful in becoming a RA. A resident assistant should always be caring and protective of his residents. He has to guide them so that they could live in a happy but safe environment. That is what I did when I went to Japan. As I was given the role of leader, I tried to live up to it. So I know the responsibilities of being a leader and how to make decisions for the sake of the team. I think these past experiences would prepare me for this position.
2. The RA position is primarily a role charged with enhancing a community among a diverse group of people. Please explain how you define community and why you think you will be a successful community builder.
Community is like a Venn diagram. It is all about relations between a finite group of people or things. People have their own circles and, sometimes, these circles overlap one another. These interceptions are interests, common attitudes and goals that we share together. These interceptions bond us together as a community, as a Venn diagram. A good community needs good communication where people speak and listen to each other openly and honestly. It needs ti...

... your residents during your initial community meeting? How will you achieve this?
The initial community meeting has a great impact on the tone of the community. During the meeting, I would like to tell my residents our ultimate goal, having a good community. Then I would explain what a good community is. A good community is one where we share the resources and seek to improve the environment. Characteristics of a good community would include clean and safe environments, equity and social justice, diversity, mutually-supportive relationships and eager participation of residents. I will achieve this by encouraging residents to be part of the process of establishing expectations. By this way, they would become more invested in the expectations as they help create them or otherwise they may see these expectations as imposed from above.
The community commitment is maintaining the high quality of life that exists in the community.
Kate, was my RA and really helped to make the transition a positive experience rather than a negative one. Which really made me feel like part of the community around campus and in the dorm, honestly she is what made me apply to become a RA myself. If I could help anyone else create a positive experience for someone else in a daunting situation, that would really give me a lot of joy. Moreover, I was part of Student Leadership for a year at my last college and it has given me a lot of experience with helping to navigate students along with helping them in anyway I can as a
The main focus of Block’s book is to “create a more positive and connected future for our communities, we must be willing to trade their problems for their possibilities.” The first chapter begins by laying out the format of the text and the multiple authors and their thoughts that Block will draw on to explain how to create and maintain healthy community. Block then goes on to discuss the importance of context within the community or the “fabric” of the community. Blocks makes it a point to discuss John McKnight’s three insights within a community: gifts, associational life, and community member power. Essentially, the context
Teaching, creating, influencing, sharing, spreading happiness and positivity, and believing are just a few of the amazing charastics of someone that has influenced many. They may not be in every article you read, but they are on the rise. They are working so hard just so that they can make a difference in the world. Although this person may not have made a huge impact on the world YET, and done amazing things, they are striving so that they can one day achieve this and make our world superior. This person is Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman.
Community is an essential part of the existence of human being. The term community may be describe in so many forms. However, Yiu (2012) define community as a group of people, who live, learn, work, and play in an environment at a given time; they have unique characteristics and interest; function in a social system that meets their needs, such as an organization, a region, a province or a nation (p. 213).
I am interested in the community coordinator position because I am passionate about being involved and helping others. Being a Community Coordinator to me means that I can be a resource to anyone who needs it. By being a Community coordinator, I want to be a role model of understanding and respect that others could follow. Building a strong relationship with the residents I interact with is very important to me. I believe that every person who is on this planet is a person with so much I can learn from them. Being a community coordinator also means I can positively affect people’s lives with the gifts that I possess.
I am applying to be a summer RA because I want to continue developing my skills to build and support communities for all. Throughout the academic year I have been able to promote the interaction and construction of comforting communities, and I want to continue assisting people in this area. As a summer RA, I know I have to carry many roles such as a leader, mentor, and campus security authority, all of which will allow me to effectively assist students and be a support system. Being a summer RA differs from an academic RA for several reasons. The residents you overlook is one reason. During the summer, students stay on campus for various reasons that go beyond academics. In the summer, you overlook student leaders, parents, incoming students,
"With every experience, you alone are painting your own canvas, thought by thought, choice by choice"(Winfrey). Oprah Winfrey is a very important woman in our lifetime and has influenced many people, and will for years to come. Oprah has changed a multitude of people, and made a difference in our world and society. From growing up in a poor home, to changing her life around and others around her, there are several ways that Oprah can relate to the average person.
Through these two essays, a greater sense of what community is really about emerges. Not only is community about ones surroundings, but also about the values and ideals held by that communities inhabitants. The community in which one may or may not choose to immerse ourselves in deeply effects who we are. The character, or soul, within each of us is in part shaped by the community or communities in which we belong to or reside in.
A residential advisor seeks to facilitate a positive living environment for residents. With such a position, it is important to obtain certain skills to be able to have a positive impact on students and the surrounding community. To maintain a positive living environment Resident Advisors must be prepared to react to different situations including emergency and non-emergency scenarios. Applying the knowledge from the Residential Leadership class and gaining more skills will benefit me in being an effective Resident Advisor.
I believe that the role of a Resident Assistant is a dynamic one. On the one hand, the position calls for a positive and approachable individual, of which I believe I am, so that the RA may be able to help his/her residents by giving emotional support so that the resident may better assimilate into college. However, a Resident Assistant must also appear clearly as a leader who
A community is comprised of a group of goal oriented individuals with similar beliefs and expectations. Currently the term is used interchangeably with society, the town one lives in and even religion. A less shallow interpretation suggests that community embodies a lifestyle unique to its members. Similarities within the group establish bonds along with ideals, values, and strength in numbers unknown to an individual. Ideals and values ultimately impose the culture that the constituents abide by. By becoming part of a community, socialization...
“The community is the expert”. Generally, the people within a certain environment know and understand what needs to be done to best create a sense of belonging.

A Community can be defined as a group of people who don’t just live in the same area, but also share the same interests, experiences and often concerns about the area in which they live. Often when individuals have lived on a street or in an area for a while they become familiar with each other and the issues surrounding them. Children often attend the same schools and grow up together, again sharing similar experiences. In some instances adults may work together, and quite commonly all community members will share the same doctors, dentists, hospitals, health visitors and other public services and facilities.
