1. Has Apple demonstrated global corporate citizenship? Why or why not?
What is global corporate citizenship? What is involved with the evolution of this process? Lawrence and Weber (2014) explains it as a system of an organization pledging its social and environmental accountability globally, rather than only locally. It is a melding of financial and social performance, or “capitalism with a social conscience” (Lawrence & Weber 2014 pg. 139). Global citizenship is characterized by many qualities, one of them being the organization’s responsiveness to social, political, and environmental responsibilities. Another measureable characteristic is how proactive the company is in addressing stakeholder concerns. The development of global citizenship is not an immediate development. There are phases that the company can, and should, advance through. Lawrence & Weber 2014 detail these phases as the five stage model of global citizenship. A company moves up each level as it expands its global citizenship repertoire.
The first stage is the Elementary stage, which, as its name suggests, is a phase where the company’s citizenship is in its primitive, unevolved stage. Organizational leaders are indifferent and unconcerned. Their intent is to achieve legal compliance only. Defensive, reactionary actions are par for the course, and stakeholder communication is inhibited. The company passes information to the stakeholder, but is unwilling to listen to the stakeholder’s information.
The second stage, Engaged, is where the company begins to cultivate its awareness of issues. This stage is also ...

...ic public relations move on Apple’s part.
A disadvantage of third party auditing is that mistakes and violations are uncovered, then published. The company has little control over addressing and resolving violations privately. Another disadvantage is that internal audits cost nothing to the company, while external audits are hugely expensive, especially the vast audit performed for Apple. Internal audits also tend to be performed periodically throughout the year and this action tends to resolve errors/violations before they spiral out of control. External auditing is normally performed less frequently and violations tend to build up over time.
