Children suffering emotional and behavioral disorders are in need of effective interventions and strategies that will provide them relief in stressful situations and help them self-regulate their behavior. Effective interventions for this population could result in reduced distractions (both personally and within the classroom) and enable them to increase their learning time, thereby optimizing their educational careers. An intervention of yoga and related relaxation techniques may provide students a natural and holistic approach to accomplishing these goals.
Emotional and behavioral disorders manifest from various sources. For some children, the core of these disorders is rooted in such factors as “family adversity...poverty, caregiving instability, maternal depression, family stress…marital discord…dysfunctional parenting patterns…abuse and neglect” (Fox, Dunlap & Cushing, 2002, p. 150). These factors are stressors that affect children both emotionally and behaviorally. Students have their educational performance and academic success impeded by such stressors once in school, which creates even more stress as they find themselves frustrated and failing. As a result, problem behaviors may manifest that can be described as disruptive, impulsive, pre-occupied, resistant to change, aggressive, intimidating, or dishonest. Such behaviors may also inflict self-harm.
Students suffering emotional and behavioral disorders can benefit from a variety of classroom accommodations that may help lessen the severity of their behaviors and/or reactions to external stimuli. The child may benefit from therapy in their education to help in educating a bit better on how to complete tasks at a manageable level for the child. The child may also be placed into an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or special needs class pertaining to the level of difficulty the child is having in the class, working on the material and completing the work that has been assigned. Another option would be cognitive as well as emotional therapy to assist in training to better manage the outcomes of becoming frustrated or angered at various tasks. Also, to remember that this is still a child and still growing and does not yet understand how to properly cope with emotions, such as anger and may have outbursts for no reason. The emotional therapy will work with not only the child, but the parents as well, so that both the child and the parents can benefit from this type of therapy – working closely and monitoring the emotional stability of the growing and developing child. The parent may want to keep a diary of the child’s behavior and / or progress and / or setbacks. Play therapy, music and meditation is also another outlet (Zipkin, 1985). Because the child exhibited a higher intelligence, the diagnosis was, from the teacher, initially missed; since those who have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity and rate very high on the intelligence scale may not receive the attention needed to positively identify the specific markers. Since the child is still young, they will need to learn to cope with day-to-day living with this, and learn to manage not only anger, and frustration, but how to stay on task, how to complete a task as well as the task being on time. Sometime parents bears some responsibility of pushing their children too hard, we all know the horror stories of “Tiger Moms”. I am strong believer of striking a balance between pushing children too hard and letting them learn and grow from their mistakes. I also strongly believe that certain children may benefit from stress-relieving practices that meant to calm their mind and help release physical tension. Teaching children mindfulness where they can focus and concentrate has huge benefits, a mindful child become more aware of his or her mood of and learns the ability to control it. Students who exhibit inappropriate, disruptive behaviors may do so for various reasons. The variety of explanations for problem behavior can cause confusion as to what specific interventions are best suitable for the individual student. There are frequent assumptions that knowing the cause of problematic behavior will assist with the best way to handle it. However, finding an effective intervention does not necessarily indicate the origin of cause for troublesome behavior. In fact, multiple causal factors are interrelated with the most common causal factors being family, school, biological, and culture. In reading chapter seven of the textbook, the education of students with emotional and behavior disorders was not common before the turn of the twentieth century. Before children were thought of as having mental illnesses, many researchers thought that this was only diagnosed in adults. For a child to be known to have a mental issue back in the nineteenth century was said to be evil or satanic. It was very challenging to study emotional behavior disorders in children. Unfortunately, there was no way to describe the disorder. Doctors and professional were terrified to admit that children could have mental illnesses. In the 1960’s, schools began to service students with emotional behavior disorders but they were generally still considered to be ill. Although students with emotional and behavior disorder were in school, it was still the responsibility of doctors and psychologist to service the needs of the students. During this time, there were three ways of identifying emotional behaviors. The first was called functional approach, the second was mental hygiene movement, and the third, behaviorism. There was a period from the 1930’s to the 1950’s were children were being observed to classify various types of emotional behavior disorders. By 1975, during the passing of public law 94-142, students with emotional behavior disorders were now being served in the public schools. Since the passing of the law, professionals have researched interventions and ways to treat children with emotional behavior disorders.
Students with emotional and behavioral disorders (E/BD) frequently exhibit academic deficits alongside their behavioral deficits, particularly in the area of reading; however, there are very few studies examining ways to address the reading problems of this population of students at the middle and high school level. The academic deficits exhibited by students with emotional and behavioral disorders (E/BD) are well documented in research literature. As outlined in the federal definition of emotional disturbance, students with this disorder demonstrate an inability to learn and, as a result, pose instructional challenges alongside the behavioral problems that they exhibit in the school environment.
