In the United States, 20% of adults smoke. It’s the number one cause of death that is easily avoidable. Anti-smoking ads occasionally pop up in our society, often depicting the harmful effects of cigarettes through graphic pictures or startling images. The ad I have chosen is depicting a man, probably in his 20’s, smoking a cigarette with the smoke from it forming a gun pointed to his head. To the side reveal the words, “Kill a cigarette, save a life. Yours.” The ad uses the three rhetorical appeals of ethos, logos and pathos through its image and meaning. This image can convey a clear sensation of harm and promotes awareness of the deadliness of smoking.

The ad was created to get a response from its audience, which are both smokers and non-smokers. In the non-smoker audience, the image will either heighten their distaste of smoking and its dangerous health effects, or they will ignore it because it has little effect on their lives. In many countries, today, this is general knowledge. Almost any person would the say the same. This is especially true in North American culture where smoking is generally viewed as harmful and bad, unlike in past years, where smoking was okay and even uplifted throughout society. The minor thought is that smoking is the same as pointing a gun at yourself. This is shown by the smoke from the cigarette forming a gun at the young man’s head. From the facts of the harm that cigarettes cause and the image of the gun, we can conclude that that the statement Ashcraft is making is that smoking is suicidal. This statement is highlighted by the words on the image, which motivates people that smoke to stop smoking.
