School is a frightening place. It is broken down into multiple social ranks, and many children find themselves at the bottom. With children trying to work their way to the top of the food chain, the actual learning portion is either set aside or forgotten altogether. In Grant Penrod’s essay, Anti-Intellectualism: Why We Hate the Smart Kids, he explains how modern children are growing to dislike intellectual children. The varying social ranks teach children to ignore low grades and try to be popular in school. Anti-Intellectualism is a trend which is becoming increasingly popular throughout the world. People who only strive to be popular tend to tease intellectuals, but this is not half of the story. If the only goal children have in school is to be popular, their grades will slowly drop until eventually, they will not be learning at all. To make matters worse, many children are born with the ability to learn at accelerated rates, which causes other students to believe these naturally intelligent children do not have a life outside of their studies. One of the reasons these intellectuals are not social, is the students they are trying to socialize with are bullying them.
Intellectuals rarely receive praise for their accomplishments. Famous scientists such as Albert Einstein and innovators such as Bill Gates are some of few examples of intellectual people who transformed the world, but a majority of the time, the media draws more attention to sports teams, athletes, and celebrities. “[I]ntellectuals constantly see their efforts trivialized in the rush to lavish compliments everywhere,” which illustrates how intellectuals are ignored for their accomplishments (Penrod, 754). Once an intellectual child has become friends with another classmate, the friendship can grow and can even lead to the other classmate finding a new interest. Bullying may not prevent intellectuals from socializing, but it effect whether a child is willing to.
Students should not ostracize their Intellectual classmates for their talent. Instead, they should strive to be smarter too. Intellectuals deserve more credit for their accomplishments, no matter what the celebrities or other classmates are saying. If students stop bullying intellectuals, the intellectuals may make the time to start friendships. With proper treatment and encouragement, intellectuals may set the standard for later generations.
