On April 11th, 2016, I attended the monthly Henry County School Board Meeting. At this meeting teachers, parents, students, and board members discussed issues and achievements that have recently occurred within the county. The meeting was conducted by six board members who followed an agenda, which consisted of three different focus areas. The board meeting began with a call of order, progressed by addressing agenda items, and ended with an adjournment.
The board meeting started with a call of order, which was led by one of the board members. Participants then recited the pledge of allegiance, for the purpose of recognizing the importance of citizenship that relates to all government facilities. ...hey will provide students with more food, otherwise it would be necessary to conduct further research to figure out why the board members voted “yes” to this item.
From this observation, I learned the power that the school board has over decisions that are made for the county. These decisions influence everyone involved in school systems, from the principals, students, and teachers, to almost all of the members of the community. Given the fact that local school boards have limited power as decisions are increasingly made on a federal level, it is difficult to imagine the number of people influenced by decisions with in education systems. This experience emphasized the importance of local communities gaining back power over decisions made for their schools, since issues are specific to each community, and therefore should not be generalized with the entire country.
