This literature review will analyze and critically explore four studies that have been conducted on hand hygiene compliance rates by Healthcare workers (HCWs). Firstly, it will look at compliance rates for HCWs in the intensive care units (ICU) and then explore the different factors that contribute to low hand hygiene compliance. Hospital Acquired infections (HAI) or Nosocomial Infections appear worldwide, affecting both developed and poor countries. HAIs represent a major source of morbidity and mortality, especially for patients in the ICU (Hugonnet, Perneger, & Pittet, 2002). Hand hygiene can be defined as any method that destroys or removes microorganisms on hands (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2009). According to the World Health Organization (2002), a HAI can be defined as an infection occurring in a patient in a hospital or other health care facility in whom the infection was not present or incubating at the time of admission. Bacteria that is resistant to antibiotics is a major problem not only for the United States, but worldwide. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2012) the cause is related to “widespread overuse, as well as inappropriate use, of antibiotics that is fueling antibiotic resistance”. According to World Health Organization (2013) resistance is a global concern for several reasons; it impedes the control of infectious diseases, increases healthcare costs, and the death rate for patients with resistant bacterial infections is twice of those with non-resistant bacterial infections.

These infections are often associated with improper catheterization techniques. Surgical site infections occur after surgery in the part of the body where the surgery took place. These infections may involve the top of the skin, the tissue under the skin, organs, or blood vessels. Surgical site infections sometimes take days or months after surgery to develop. The infections can be caused by improper hand washing, dressing change technique, or improper surgery procedure.

After growing the bacteria of interest on a Muller-Hinton agar plate, we added 12 different antimicrobial filter paper disks. The lack or presence of growth around the disks is how we will assay the ability of the antibiotics to inhibit growth of the pathogenic organism. On a wider scale the Kirby-Bauer susceptibility test can assist physicians in selecting treatment on their patients that carry infectious diseases; by determining bacterial resistance to antimicrobials physicians can provide accurate care in a timely manner. The Kirby-Bauer method has been standardized and is a practicable alternative to the arduous broth dilution technique, making it the best method to test our hypothesis.

Kirby -Bauer Assay Abstract: In this Experiment, antibiotics will be applied to the bacteria to find out which antibiotic will be most effective in controlling the growth of the bacteria by comparing it to the control group. Introduction: This lab will help figure out which antibiotic is most effective in hindering the bacterial growth by measuring the zones of inhibition.
When a wound is determined as non-healable, as described by Sibbald et al (1), it should not be treated with a moist treatment and should be kept dry in order to reduce the risk of infection that would compromise the limb. It is also important to consider the patient 's preferences and try to control his pain, his discomfort in activities of daily living and the odour that their wound may produce. In this case, special attention must be given to infection prevention and control. Some charcoal dressing would be interesting in the care of our non-healable wounds at St. Mary 's Hospital.
