Zoos and aquariums are commonly filled with children running around eager with curiosity and excitement. The children laugh and smile as they gaze at the many different animals at the zoo. What most people do not understand is that most of these animals are broken on the inside. Wild animals should not be kept in captivity because animals that are kept in captivity ultimately suffer at the hands of humans. When wild animals are kept in captivity it reduces their lifespan, it forces them to live in a habitat that they are not meant to live in, and they are used for entertainment purposes that puts stress on them and the people around them in danger. These animals can suffer severe psychological disorders from being out of their natural environment. The disadvantages of keeping animals in captivity are becoming more and more serious, and more people are beginning to believe that animals should be able to live in their natural habitat. Nonetheless, there are numerous reasons that wild animals should not be kept in captivity.

To begin with, it has been shown that wild animals live shorter lives when they are kept in captivity. According to Schmid (2008), animals in the wild or in natural working conditions had life spans twice that or more of their relatives in zoos; In addition, Asian elephants born in zoos have shorter life spans than do Asian elephants brought to the zoos from the wild. Yong (2008) wrote that a study done in 2008 showed that African elephants in Amboseli National park live for about 56 years, while those born in zoos lasted a mere 17 years. Society fails to realize that these animals that are kept in captivity did not choose to stay locked in a cage for the greater duration of their lives.

...n captivity. While there may be some benefits to wild animals living in captivity, ultimately it does more harm than good. When wild animals are kept in captivity, their lifespan decreases, they are forced to entertain humans, and they are forced to live in substitute habitats that do not offer what their natural habitats offer. Humans that care for these wild animals in captivity are put in danger when the animals become aggressive towards them. The public theme park industries advocate that marine mammal exhibits provide an important role in educating, entertaining, and conservation; they see nothing wrong with captivity. An increasing number of scientists counter this view and believe that animals should flourish naturally and are too intelligent to be held captive. It is going to take people to come together as a society to fight for the rights of these animals.
