Animals Should Not Be Banned

Have you ever thought about what happens to the animals at a shelter that do not get the chance to be adopted? In some cases, they may stay there or move to other shelters, or in the worst case, be euthanized. In other cases, they are given to research facilities to be used as testing animals. Euthanizing the animals would be better than forcing them to live in a lab. Some shelters will even charge the research facilities to get the animals for testing. “Research shows that people only accept animal research when they think that the animals do not ever suffer, and that it is scientifically necessary” (Capaldo et. al). Animals should not be used for research due to the fact that their lives are being taken away from them, there are large economic effects and the animals are innocent. With this, the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) was created in 1966 and is one of the only federal laws that provide minimal protection to the animals in the research facilities that are being tested on. To start, there are so many lives of animals being taken away due to the amounts animal research testing. “Saying this, about 200 animals could be killed per test with estimates of the number of animal testings ranging from tens to hundreds of millions” (PETA). “Each year, more than 100 million animals—including mice, rats, frogs, dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, monkeys, fish, and birds—are killed in U.S. laboratories for biology lessons, medical training, curiosity-driven experimentation, and chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics testing” (PETA). Also, the testings that are done can be very unreliable, unsafe, expensive and very time-consuming. These testings they go through range of cosmetic testing all the way to disease testing. This is because... ... middle of paper ... ...ilities that are being tested on. Finally, to use animals for research is a harsh thing to do. Not only are their lives being taken away for no apparent reason, but their testing programs cost a lot and the lives being taken are innocent lives. People never realize that amount of physical and mental pain that the animals experience in this testing so the companies can make a profit off of their success with the research. Not only is there not always a success with the research, but it does not always work how it was intended to. There are solutions to use instead of having to use animals and torture them, it just takes time and effort to get there. Every animal should have the right to live freely, not in a cage being tested on and having to suffer. If you or your family have pets, do you ever want to think about what they would have to endure in a testing facility?
