Animals are Disappearing Due to Our Rising Temperatures

Animals are disappearing because of warming temperatures and fast melting ice in the Arctic (Arrandale). Polar bears are an example of a species on the verge of extinction because of climate changes. According to Arrandale biologist believe that two- thirds of the Northern Hemisphere’s estimated 20,000 polar bears will disappear in the next 50 years. “As the sea goes, so goes the polar bears,” said Steven Amstrump, a biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey (Arrandale). There are thousands of other plants and animals all over the world threatened by extinction everyday. Some scientists believe that driving a species to extinction is worse than global warming; we can try and limit global warming but once a species is gone it is gone. The number of all earths animals is expected to be extinct in the next century is about one-third to one-half. As animals become sick and die this will cause a threat to humans, animals play a huge role in our lives we should protect them. To much greenhouse gases becoming trapped in the atmosphere is causing disasters (Greenblatt) like rising sea levels, melting ice caps, droughts, floods, and hurricanes. There was a document issued in 1997 called the Kyoto Protocol. What that did was ask countries that were industrialized to reduce their carbon emission. The U.S. did not have to follow this protocol, but some U.S. mayors and government officials chose to abide by it in their own cities and towns. While Bush was President global warming became a popular topic amongst American citizens, but the President and...

New information from the National Atmospheric Administration shows that the Arctic has made major changes. The information indicates low snow coverage and intense melting. The Arctic is affected by climate change more then anything else in the world. The ice in the Arctic Ocean is melting faster and faster. Ice use to cover 2.8 square miles and now covers less then 1.4 million, half of the ice in the Arctic Ocean has disappeared in such a short amount of time(Weeks). The melting ice is catching peoples attention, is has the possibility to make new trade routes for ships. According to the U.S. Geographical Survey, the Arctic may have large undiscovered oil and gas resources (Weeks). As the Arctic warms it will attract more and more attention.
