Animal testing is not only cruel to animals, it is also expensive. Animal testing is used for various reasons, from testing household chemicals to biomedical research. 115 million of living animals from mice to farm animals, are used in product and medical testings. Animals are made to suffer for the advancement of humans. Originating in ancient times, animal testing is still used today. The testings occur at places massively involved in research, “at universities, hospitals, contract laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, and government agencies” (Animals Used, PETA). Experiments often leave animals in physical as well as psychological distress or pain. Again for human benefit, animal trials are used to determine whether a product is safe for humans, the environment, and ironically animals. Even if most consumers prefer products that were not tested on animals, many companies still do. Some companies that support barbarity towards animals include Avon, Pantene, Listerine, Arm & Hammer, Febreze, even Johnson & Johnson. The 1940s started the testing of cosmetics to prevent skin and eye irritation. Unlike medical testing, cosmetics only have to be tested when a new formula is created. Companies research simply to avoid lawsuits, efficacy and safety. Another reason companies test is if they “market products overseas because they may be required to submit them for animal testing, however today, many countries around the world have passed laws banning the testing on animals” (Animals Used in Cosmetics, NAVS). There are alternatives to product testing “manufacturers can now drop a chemical onto 3D tissue structures produced from human cells” (Animals Used for Experimentation, PETA).
