Animal Research Animals are currently being tested all over the world. They are being tested for things such as cosmetics, prescriptions drugs, and used for scientific testing. It is estimated that over 100 million animals are used for testing. Rats, mice, guinea pigs, rabbits, and monkeys are common animals used to test newly developed products. These testing procedures and conditions in which these animal must live are widely scrutinized among animal activists. There are many heated debates on whether or not animals should be used for testing. Current government regulations require that all new production available for human consumption undergo animal testing. New procedures for animal testing are necessary to allow the researchers to meet government regulations and to appease animal activists. Animal research should be ended, it is wrong to assume that animals do not feel pain or anguish as they endure needles, pain, diseases, and death. A common misconception with regard to animal testing is that animals are genetically similar to humans. Many animals are different than humans, so animal testing does not always benefit the lives of humans. Dr. Richard Klausner, a former National Cancer Institute director said, “we have cured mice of cancer for decades, and it simply didn’t work in humans” (qtd in Thompson par. 5). Animal testing does not benefit the humans if the animals used are genetically different. Illnesses and diseases that have been imitated in laboratory animals are not the same as the diseases that happen in humans naturally. “Diseases that are artificially induced in animals in a laboratory are never identical to those that occur naturally in human beings” (Thompson par. 4). Researching on animals is an inhuman way of trying to improve medicinal research. There are other alternatives to experimentation on animals that could save millions of animals from being experimented on and killed. Researchers need to eliminate the use of animals in research. People should stand up for the animals that are being mistreated and being slaughtered. All living creatures should be valued equally, whether human or animal.

Animals are used to test the safety of products, advance scientific research, and develop models to study disease and to develop new medical treatments, all for the sake of mankind. Animals should not be used for scientific research because animal testing is inhumane, other testing methods now exist, and animals are very different from human beings. While animal testing has led to many life-saving cures, animal testing is cruel and inhumane because it involves inflicting pain and harm on the test subject to study its effects and remedies. Testing involves physically restraining, force-feeding, and depriving animals of food and water.
When the issue of Animal Testing is brought up in the course of a conversation, almost every single person that is involved in this discussion will have opinions that differ in some way, shape, or form. Many people will talk about the horrific conditions that animals are forced to live under, as well as the pain and suffering that they must endure while being tested. However, these conditions are not all that horrible when you take into account the state of the world we live in. This issue can be debated back and forth until the end of time. It is an issue involving two totally opposite views, pros versus cons. Pro-Con. The Con side will state that so many animals are needlessly used while in a test, but according to Roger Marshall, large numbers must be used in tests in order to account for statistically reliable results (Marshall 1). The Con side will also say it is not needed, and it serves no purpose, however, animal testing is a great thing, because it can help find cures for human illnesses, it can aid in the advancements of medical procedures, and it can also find cures for illnesses of animals. For many years, performing research on animals has had invaluable benefits for the human race, and without the constant developments we receive from it, we might still be plagued by the most medieval of viruses that we do not even think about in this day in age. The probability of heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure would greatly increase if we did not possess the medication we can now use to control high blood pressure. According to the American Medical Progress Education Foundation, great advancements have been made regarding cardiology, including coronary blood flow, coronary bypass techniques and high blood pressure medication (Research 2). Many medications have been produced as a result of testing on animals, including insulin, the medication used to regulate diabetes. If animals were not used in medical research, we might still be living in a world where we must fear diseases like polio, smallpox, and even measles. Human Benefits. Medicine alone is not the only thing that has been vastly improved due to animal testing, the way we treat diseases and surgeries has all drastically changed and improved.

Consuming animals for research benefits in developing various treatments and also benefits in discovery better methods for cures. It relies on the physiological and anatomical similarities between humans and other animals (MacClellan, Joel). Meaning that animals have the same body components and features as humans and is the best thing to research on to better understand the human development. Even though several argue that animal testing is harming the animals, one has to think back to all the benefits that has come from it. There may be a little remorse for endangering animal lives, but realizing how far medicine has come makes it worth the while.

Many people are left wondering whether animal testing should or should not be allowed when discovering advantages and disadvantages of new products. Animal testing is a debated-topic. The reason this subject is widely-conversed is because many people question the safety of the animals and the effectiveness of using animals rather than alternatives while experimenting the potential effects of a product. Testing on animals is not good for them. It hurts the animals. Animals feel things just like humans. The people claim that, animal testing infringes animal’s rights, makes animal suffering in the experiments, and some of animal experiments may never be useful to human beings. This is true, but we cannot stop animal testing. According to the article “Facts about Animal Research” by Cook (2006), the smallpox has disappeared from the earth because scientists get vaccines from cows. Also, the scientists got insulin, which is the only drug, which can control diabetes, from dogs and fish. Many medicines are related to medical animal experiments, we cannot give up medical animal experiments.
In conclusion, animal testing is simply impractical and unneeded, among other things such as cruel and inhumane. Millions of animals’ lives are lost each year, and many of the results the sacrificed animals gave us are not even relevant to humans. The basic needs of the animals used in these experiments are also not met, and the animals endure many days of pain. 97,123 animals were experimented on without any relief of the pain just in the US in 2010. Many of the animals used in experiments are euthanised or left to die afterwards. Animal testing is cruel, and it would be better for everyone if we would just ban it.

In addition scientists causing pain, most drugs that pas successfully in animals fail in humans. It is qualified as a bad science. Above all, animals have rights not to be harmed even though the Animal Welfare Act does not provide them even with minimal protection. The law does not find it necessary to use current alternatives to animals, even if they are obtainable. Animal testing should be banned due to animal rights, ethical issues, alternative ways and the unreliability of test results in humans.
It has long been debated as to whether it is ethical to use animals for experimentation. When considering whether animal research is ethically acceptable or not two main concerns must be raised. The first issue is whether it is absolutely necessary to use animals in order to acquire information that may contribute to the improvement of people’s health and well-being. The second issue is whether the use of animals is defendable on a moral ground.
