Animal cruelty is the human infliction of suffering, pain, or even death to an animal for the purposes of training, discipline, sport or because it was intentional. Animal cruelty can be inflicted upon any animal on the planet weather they are domestic or exotic. In fact, an animal is abused every sixty seconds. By the end of this speech five or more animal will have been abused and during a typical school day beginning at 8 a.m. and ending at 2:15 more than 375 animals will have been submitted to some form of abuse. Millions of people across the world own some type of animal. In the United States alone 62% percent of households, more than 164 million, have at least one pet. An estimated of 83.3 million dogs and 95.6 million cats were owned and this is just the amount in the United States. Due to HSUS calculations, more than one million of these animals will be abused or killed each year in relation to domestic violence.
There is a strong link between domestic violence and animal abuse. According to the CDC; killing, harming, or threatening to harm animals are weapons abusers use against their victims to manipulate them into silence and take away the comfort of the animal. According to the ASPCA “Twelve

This involves failing to provide food, water, shelter and veterinary care. Failing to provide these necessities leads to severe injuries and even death. Animal Control agencies nationwide report that cases of animal neglect are the most common calls they respond to. Examples of neglect include starving the animal. Many cases of neglect involve an animal that is skinny to the bone due to a lack of food. Another form of neglect is imbedded collars. It is the owner’s responsibility to change an animal’s collar size as it gets older. Them failing to do this results to the collar digging into the animals neck. According to the article “Pet Statistics” by the ASPCA estimates there are 70-80 million dogs and 74-96 million cats owned in the United States. It is impossible to determine the number of stray dogs and cats, but the ASPCA estimates there are 70 million cats alone that are strays in the US (“Pet Statistics”). The overpopulation of dogs and cats live either on the streets and die each day, they live in a shelter and try to get adopted, but even then they die. The ASPCA states that nationwide about 7.6 million companion animals enter the shelter and of the 7.6 million approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats (“Pet Statistics”).

Animals are used today for many sources of protection, food, clothing, transportation, sports, entertainment, and labor, but millions of these animals die each year from abuse. “Most of the reasons that people give for denying animals rights are: animals do not have souls, god gave humans dominion over the animals, humans are intellectually superior to animals, humans are intellectually superior to animals, animals do not reason, think, or feel pain like humans do, animals are a natural resource to used as humans see fit, and animals kill each other” (Evans). It all started in the nineteenth century, when people began abusing animals by beating them, feeding them poorly, providing them with no shelter or poor shelter, left to die if they were sick or old, or by cruel sports. Most of the organized efforts to improve human treatment of animals all started in England. Around the 1800s, there was signs of rising concern for animal welfare in the United States.
Should animals have to go through pain and suffering? Should they have to go without food and/or water? The answer is no. Animal abuse happens everyday and it happens because people are barbarous or because they don’t know how to take the best care of an animal that they have. Whatever the reason it’s still not right and will never be okay. This paper will cover a brief history of animal abuse, the statistics, the signs of animal abuse, and what can be done to stop animal abuse. Animal abuse needs to end for the animals that can’t speak for themselves.
Animal cruelty is a rapidly growing nationwide problem. Animals are being battered and starved everyday. There are many forms of animal cruelty; some forms are scientific research, abandonment, and mistreatment.
The pet industry is undoubtedly thriving. According to a survey conducted by American Pet Products Association, 56% of families in the United States owned a pet in 1988. Dogs, cats, horses, and many other types of animals are being neglected and tortured everyday, yet resulting in few and minor consequences for the perpetrators. Animal abuse is prevalent in the United States and has been an ongoing issue since the 1970's, and prior to. Society as a whole has chosen to avoid the facts and arguments about animal cruelty, because to some it is seen as acceptable and typical. People also abuse animals due to lack of attention, such as forgetting to feed and water the animals for a number of days. A family may take the animals with them when they leave the house, and forget to leave a window down with the animal inside. One of the biggest unintentional ways of animal cruelty is a way that many people think is helpful but is actually has a negative impact on all of the animals involved, this idea is trying to take in more animals than one can handle, they have good intentions but this is harmful to animals because it forces them to live in unhealthy conditions. There are many new cases of animal hoarding every year, with over 250,000 animals falling victim. Puppy mills are large dog breeding’s that care more about making money than the wellbeing and health of the animals. Many dogs become ill with diseases such as kidney or heart disease as a result of the conditions in which they live.
