Animal cruelty is the human infliction of suffering, pain, or even death to an animal for the purposes of training, discipline, sport or because it was intentional. Animal cruelty can be inflicted upon any animal on the planet weather they are domestic or exotic. In fact, an animal is abused every sixty seconds. By the end of this speech five or more animal will have been abused and during a typical school day beginning at 8 a.m. and ending at 2:15 more than 375 animals will have been submitted to some form of abuse.
Millions of people across the world own some type of animal. In the United States alone 62% percent of households, more than 164 million, have at least one pet. An estimated of 83.3 million dogs and 95.6 million cats were owned and this is just the amount in the United States. Due to HSUS calculations, more than one million of these animals will be abused or killed each year in relation to domestic violence.
There is a strong link between domestic violence and animal abuse. According to the CDC; killing, harming, or threatening to harm animals are weapons abusers use against their victims to manipulate them into silence and take away the comfort of the animal. According to the ASPCA “Twelve separate studies have reported that between 18 and 48 percent of battered women, and their children, delay leaving abusive situations in fear for what might happen to their animals.” The Chicago police department also found that 30 percent of individuals arrested for dog fighting had a record of domestic violence charges. Due to the amount of women who seek protection from abusers that are worried about their animals, several states have passed a law in regards to this. A puppy mill is an establishment that breeds puppies for sale, typically on an intensive basis and in conditions regarded as inhumane. Puppy mills do not breed dogs to the best genetic quality which often results in hereditary defects. Health problem these dogs receive include heart disease, musculoskeletal disorders, deafness, eye problems, and respiratory disorders. A large amount of puppies are crammed into little cages without adequate food and water. They also do not receive proper veterinary care. Puppy mills along with all of the other subjects listed are all different forms of animal cruelty. Animal cruelty is an ongoing issue that organizations like the ASPCA, HSUS, and PETA are trying to irradiate.
